Long-running NYC indie rock band The Mommyheads are back with new album Coney Island Kid that will be out September 19 via Mommyhead Music in most of the world and FANFAR! Records in Europe. This is their 15th long-player and their first ever concept album, using “Coney Island imagery to convey themes of desperation and soul-searching, complete with pierside ambience.”
The new single off the album is “Why Aren’t You Smiling,” that features that signature Mommyheads blend of proggy orch pop, crunchy indie and lyrical pathos. The video was directed by frontman Adam Elk and featuring the band smiling through a series of slow-motion onslaughts worthy of ’90s Nickelodeon. Watch below.
The Mommyheads have lined up a few special Northeast tour dates, which are with Per Sunding of Swedish cult heroes Eggstone. (If you’ve never heard Eggstone, they were contemporaries of The Cardigans and share a similar ’90s orbit. Check ’em out.) These will be the first US shows Per Sunding has ever played and he’ll be backed by members of The Mommyheads, Apples in Stereo and The B-52s. Dates kick off at NYC’s DROM on September 20. From there they head to Boston, Beacon, Philly and DC. All dates are listed below.
