Sam Morton is the duo of Oscar-nominated actress Samantha Morton and XL Records founder Richard Russell. The collaboration came about after Russell heard Morton on an episode of BBC Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs” and discovered they shared a lot of the same musical tastes. They traded a few emails which led to them making music. Sam Morton’s debut album, Daffodils & Dirt, is out this week via XL, and features contributions from Alabaster DePlume, Laura Groves, Jack Peñate and UB40’s Ali Campbell.
You can listen to three songs off the album now, two of which feature DePlume; all are cinematic and ethereal, mixing folk, dubby sonics and breakbeats. Sam Morton have two UK live appearances in August: they’ll play Green Man Festival on August 17 and then are part of Massive Attack‘s climate change benefit in Bristol on August 25, with is with Killer Mike, Lankum and DJ Milo.
