Richard Thompson announces new album, adds full-band NYC show to tour

Folk rock legend and former Fairport Convention member Richard Thompson has announced a new album, Ship To Shore, due May 31 via New West Records (pre-order). It’s his first album since his acclaimed 2018 album 13 Rivers and it also follows the 2021 release of his. memoir Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975.

“I think of my base as being British traditional music,” Richard says, “but there’s also Scottish music, there’s Irish music. There’s jazz and country and classical. As far as I’m concerned, once you establish your base, you can reach out anywhere. It’ll still be you ringing through, wherever you decide to go musically.”

Those elements have long come through in Richard’s music, a handful of them are on full display on new single “Singapore Sadie.” “I have been playing this live over the past year or so and it has become a favorite,” Richard says. “We recorded it really quickly in two or three takes and David Mansfield is featured on the fiddle.” Listen below.

Richard is about to begin a US solo tour, with New York shows in Westchester (3/1) and Beacon (3/2) this weekend, followed by Long Island and New Jersey shows in April. He also just announced a new full-band show happening at NYC’s Town Hall on October 18, and sooner than that he plays one at NJ’s Cape May Convention Hall on July 28. All dates are listed below.
