Rex Orange County has announced a new album, The Alexander Technique, due September 6 via RCA. Rex produced it alongside Teo Halm (Rosalía, SZA, Beyoncé) and longtime touring Rex Orange County member Jim Reed, and James Blake appears on and co-produced “Look Me In The Eyes.”
“The Alexander Technique is very much a look into my own brain and experiences over the last few years – it’s almost a diary,” Rex says. “I’ve made a lot of love songs over the years, and I feel as though this is the first time I’m trying to make a project about everything in life. In my mind, it’s exactly what I’ve always wanted to make.”
Along with the announcement comes two singles, the piano ballad “Alexander” and the folky, acoustic guitar-fueled “Guitar Song,” and you can watch the videos for both below.
Rex Orange County has also announced a theatre tour in support of the album that he’s dubbed ‘FINALLY: A Theatre Tour by Rex Orange County.’ He’ll be doing multi-night runs at theatres in Chicago, Toronto, NYC, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Austin, Oakland, Vancouver, London, and Los Angeles (where he’ll play a whopping eight shows), plus one night in Vegas. He says:
For this tour, I’m going to play a select number of cities in carefully chosen theatre venues, but will be playing multiple nights within them. Historically with each album that I’ve released, I’ve always played bigger and bigger shows. But I wanted to do something different for this particular project because sonically the new songs lend themselves to being heard in a more intimate and traditional setting. These particular venues have allowed me to create a show with a theatrical stage set to further narrate the themes of the album alongside the music. I love playing live and I can’t wait to bring this new album to life across so many beautiful rooms and iconic stages.
The NYC shows happen at Beacon Theatre on October 11, 12, and 13 (UPDATE: they added two more shows on October 15 and 16), and tickets for those shows go on BrooklynVegan presale Wednesday (7/24) at noon.
