Redd Kross have announced their self-titled eighth album, which will be out June 28 via In the Red. It’s their first in five years, an 18-track double-LP which also marks the 45th anniversary of the band, which Jeff & Steve McDonald started when they were 15 and 11 respectively.
“We grew up with industry gatekeepers telling us you’re only allowed to do what we do up to a certain age, that if you haven’t attained some certain status of success it’s time to hang up the dream,” says Steven. “But I’m still hungry and ambitious, trying to figure out what I want to say and how to say it. I give the correct amount of fucks. I’m ready to start our third act, and for it to be magnificent.”
The album was partially inspired by watching Peter Jackson’s Get Back Beatles documentary, and you can hear it in the songs and the album’s title and cover art, openly cribbed from The White Album but of course choosing their own most appropriate color.
The first single is “Candy Coloured Catastrophe” which was lyrically inspired by, according to Steven, “the fine arts career of a well-known pop star who we love-love-love, and also love to make fun of.” Jeff adds, “Our message is, ‘What is art?’ Who gets to decide? And maybe these rock-stars who suddenly decide they’re fine artists and Hollywood actors who decide they’re punk-rock singers should, you know, stay in their lane.” Watch the video below.
Redd Kross have also announced a summer tour which hits Jersey City on July 25 at White Eagle Hall and Brooklyn on July 26 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets for all shows — which include a DJ set from Melvins/Redd Kross drummer Dale Crover — go on sale Friday, May 3 at 10 AM local time. All dates are listed below.
In further celebration of Redd Kross’s 45th anniversary is new biography Now You’re One Of Us, written by Steven and Jeff along with Dan Epstein, and due October 24 via Omnibus Press.
