Puscifer, the project of Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Mat Mitchell, and Carina Round, have announced their first album in over 5 years. Normal Isn’t, the follow-up to 2020’s Existential Reckoning, is due out on February 6 via Puscifer Entertainment/Alchemy Recordings/BMG. They wrote and recorded it during last year’s Sessanta tour, and according to a press release, it “channels the post-punk influences that shaped the members’ early musical experiences while pushing into darker, more guitar-driven territory.” “We’re definitely leaning into our early influences,” Keenan says. “It’s the place where goth meets punk. It’s where I came from.”
Mitchell, who co-produced the album, adds, “From the outset, we had discussed an element of rawness and edge, which guitar brings. We got rid of the guard rails and made the music more aggressive.”
The album features contributions from Greg Edwards (bass), Gunnar Olsen (drums), Sarah Jones (drums), Tony Levin (bass on “Normal Isn’t” and “Seven One”), Tool’s Danny Carey (drums on “Seven One”) and Mr. Ian Ross (father of Atticus Ross, who narrates “Seven One”). Puscifer have also announced a North American tour with special guest Dave Hill supporting the album, beginning in Las Vegas on March 20 and wrapping up in Los Angeles on May 14. The NYC show is at Terminal 5 on April 7, and tickets to all dates go on sale Friday, October 24 at 10 AM local, with an artist presale starting Wednesday, October 22 at 10 AM local (use the password PSC26).
