Denver hardcore/alt-rock fusionists Public Opinion have signed to SideOneDummy and announced a new three-song EP, Perpetual Motion Machine, due out on September 19 (pre-order). The EP was recorded by Christian Gutierrez and mixed I Am The Avalanche/Movielife drummer by Brett Romnes, and lead single “Laughing Academy” features a guest verse from Drug Church’s Patrick Kindlon. It’s the band’s cleanest-sounding song yet, and easily one of their catchiest. If you haven’t hopped aboard the Public Opinion train yet but you’re into the aforementioned Drug Church or Militarie Gun or Liquid Mike (both of whom Public Opinion are heading out on tour with this year), don’t miss this.

Public Opinion’s hooks are as tenacious as Hart’s dogged lyricism, and Perpetual Motion Machine explores the trials and tribulations of trying to balance your creative life with your real life. “It could be taken as ‘why are we doing this still?'” [vocalist Kevin] Hart half-jokes. “And, to be fair, I do often feel this way. I’ve shaped my life to allow me to create and perform music, so when you start getting diminishing returns, it can feel like ‘what the f*ck have I done to myself?'” But Public Opinion’s determined stubbornness is part of their charm: this is music for the mutants, they’re going to make it whether you’re listening or not, but you’ll be happy that you did. “The tightrope walk between trying to pursue creative endeavors while also being a grown adult with responsibilities isn’t always fun,” says Hart. “but it certainly can be rewarding.”

The tour with Militarie Gun and Liquid Mike kicks off on October 25 and includes two NYC-area shows: Long Island’s Amityville Music Hall on November 7 and Lakewood, NJ’s Maggie’s Bar & Grill on November 8.
