Pianos Become the Teeth are celebrating 10 years of their third album and first for Epitaph, 2014’s Keep You, on tour this fall. They’ll play the album in full at shows starting on September 18 in Boston, running through Los Angeles on October 13. Openers are to be announced, and you can see all dates below.
The NYC show is at TV Eye on September 19, and there’s a Long Island show at Amityville Music Hall on September 21. Tickets to all dates go on sale Wednesday, May 15 at 12 PM local, with an artist/venue presale starting Tuesday, May 14 at 12 PM local.
We included Keep You in our list of 30 Classic Emo & Post-Hardcore Albums Turning 10 in 2024, and wrote, “Pianos Become the Teeth had been gradually branching out from their screamo roots into melodic clean-sung territory on The Lack Long After closer “I’ll Get By” and even more so on “Hiding” from their 2013 split with Touché Amoré, but their Epitaph debut Keep You made the transition complete. It was closer to The National than to pageninetynine, without losing any of the intensity of Pianos’ more aggressive material. If anything, the less chaotic nature of the music and Kyle Durfey’s clean vocals made it so his words landed with even more impact, and Keep You is some of his most gripping, emotional, personal songwriting. The album largely deals with his father’s passing, and highly specific details like ‘I got your picture sitting on the sink/You were so young, so skinny, so quick to laugh’ become even more widely relatable than overarching statements on loss and grief. It’s such a vocal-forward record that it might not immediately scan as ‘post-rock,’ but that’s the territory that these towering, climactic, and disarmingly beautiful instrumentals most often fall in. It’s almost hard to remember that it once felt like a bold move for Pianos to make this stylistic change; at this point, Keep You is their definitive statement.” Stream it below.
