Perfume Genius announces new LP & tour, shares “It’s a Mirror”

Perfume Genius has announced his seventh album, Glory. It’s the follow-up to 2022’s Ugly Season and it’s due out on March 28 via Matador. It was produced by his regular collaborator Blake Mills, and also features Mike Hadreas’ partner, keyboardist and co-writer Alan Wyffels, as well as Greg Uhlmann and Hand Habits‘ Meg Duffy on guitar, Tim Carr and Jim Keltner on drums, and Pat Kelly on bass. Aldous Harding appears on a song, “No Front Teeth,” and you can see the cover art and tracklist below.

Hadreas calls Glory his “most directly confessional” album and says its central conflict is the “back and forth between internal and external.” He adds, “I’m more engaged with the band and the audience. I’m still on some wild tear, but there’s more access and it’s more collaborative, in a way that makes it better, but also scary—because it feels more vulnerable.”

The first single is “It’s a Mirror,” which leans towards the straight-up rocking side of Perfume Genius’ art rock sound. “I wake up overwhelmed even when nothing is going on,” Hadreas says. “I spend the rest of the day trying to regulate, which I prefer to do at home alone with my thoughts. But why? They are mostly bad. They also haven’t really changed for decades. I wrote ‘It’s a Mirror’ while stuck in one of these isolating loops, seeing that something different and maybe even beautiful is out there but not quite knowing how to venture out. I have a lot more practice keeping the door closed.” Cody Critcheloe, who directed the video for 2014’s “Queen,” directed the accompanying video, which you can watch below.

Perfume Genius also announced a spring tour, which begins in Healdsburg, CA on May 12 and runs through June 27 in Portland, including an NYC show at Brooklyn Paramount on June 10. Tickets to all dates go on sale Friday, January 17 at 10 AM local, with an artist presale starting Thursday, January 16 at 10 AM local. See all dates below.
