The 2024 edition of Switzerland’s legendary Montreux Jazz Festival runs July 5-20, and this year’s lineup is diverse to say the least. Jazz is a mere part of the lineup, and across the 16 days, they’ve got Massive Attack, Jon Batiste, Air, Janelle Monáe, Sting, Kraftwerk, Deep Purple, PJ Harvey, André 3000, Diana Krall, Michael Kiwanuka, Roisin Murphy, The National, Dionne Warwick, Smashing Pumpkins, Trombone Shorty, Kokoroko, Laufey, Lenny Kravitz, Justice, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, Alice Cooper, and more.
The festival, which started in 1968, features a new layout this year, with a brand new main stage erected on top of Lake Geneva itself, and a return to the historic Casino, which Montreux’s press release helpfully notes burnt down in the ’70s and inspired Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” That Deep Purple are playing this year and will literally perform on the lake is a nice touch.
