Matt Pond revived the Matt Pond PA moniker last year after releasing an album with The Natural Lines, and he’s been rolling out singles as he gears up for a new album titled Winged Horse. Release date is TBA, but today he just released a new single, an anthemic, Arcade Fire-y song called “Connecticut” that comes with a video that nods at the film Wings of Desire. Matt says:
I wrote Connecticut about how we can’t completely break free of our nature. Even though he’s not alive, I think I finally understand my father. This realization hit me as I was looking at the calendar and saw that we have a show in Hamden, CT, on August 23rd. He went to Yale, and I was considered one of the family’s disappointments for not following in his footsteps.
My Connecticut is based on mindlessness and constant escape. I know every inch of the highway in that state—a map of beautiful mistakes denoted by city names: Hartford, Greenwich, New London, and New Haven.
I’ve learned to love the ways I’ve failed; they led me here, and I’m strangely happy with my life.
Check it out below. As Matt mentioned, he has a show coming up at Space Ballroom in Hamden on August 23, and that’s part of a string of dates that also hits NYC on August 25 at Word of Mouth in Crown Heights. He’ll be playing as an acoustic trio at that show, and it’s free but RSVP is required.
