London art-punk group Man Woman Chainsaw released the Eazy Peazy EP, their first release for Fat Possum, back in November, which dabbles in a few style that are held together with distinctive violin. You can give it a spin below. The band should have a busy 2025 with, hopefully, their debut album and first visit to the US (so far just SXSW). Check out their EP below.
We’ve been asking artists for their Top 10 of 2024 lists and Man Woman Chainsaw have given us theirs, with contributions and commentary from the whole band: Billy Ward (vocals, guitars), Emmie-Mae Avery (vocals,keys/synths), Vera Leppänen (vocals, bass), Clio Starwood (violin), Billy Doyle (Guitar), and Lola Cherry (drums). MAN WOMAN CHAINSAW – TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2024
1. Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft
I enjoyed this album more than I think I expected to. I feel almost as if I have grown up with Billie, and for some reason had always thought I would eventually fall out of love with her music but actually I have not had any reason to. I love the strings on this album, and the motific composition. I find Billie’s voice and lyrics super emotive, and her melodies very expressive. Also, the synths on this album are badass. When we are on the road in the van I find myself sleeping best to this album- I am a big fan! [Vera]
2. Nettspend – Badass F*cking Kid
Hyperpop music is an empire and Nettspend is the king. In my opinion. Not a lot of people share this opinion. The 17 year old rapper has caused a bit of a storm in the hyperpop community this year and had some of his best songs taken down because of the samples used in the beats #boycottdeftones. Today he released his album “Bad Ass F*cking Kid” and it’s heat! There isn’t a track that I feel quite fills the void “nothing like uuu” left but it’s hard nonetheless I like this guy. [Clio]
3. MJ lenderman – Manning Fireworks
The new MJ lenderman album is great- I love the big moody country production, a kinda big emo indie rock Hank Williams thing for the 20’s! Anything with copious pedal steel and pavement-y guitars has my whole heart, I’m a sucker for this sort of sound, heavy guitars and twangy lyrics. [Billy Ward]
4. Fontaines D.C. – Romance
I started getting into Fontaines when they were dropping singles for the album, first being “Starburster.” I’ve heard people critique the album for being less punky and more ‘pop’ than previous albums, but I loved how they explored new sounds and more emotionally vulnerable concepts to their music. “Sundowner” is one that really stands out to me – the spacey sound design and catchy call and response between Conor and Grian. “Bug” and the closing track “Favourite” are also such well written songs with strong poetic messages in the lyrics that I keep going back to on every commute. 5. Cameron Winter- Heavy Metal
This record came out on the day of writing this so we don’t have much to say except it sounds gorgeous- it’s a funny turn away from what the lead singer of Geese usually does but it’s a really moving and wonderfully executed record. What a voice! [Billy (Ward and Doyle)]
6. Beth Gibbons – Lives Outgrown
I’ve always loved anything Portishead related, hence why this new Beth Gibbons album is one of my faves of the year. It’s crushing and was the perfect soundtrack for a failed English summer. It feels somewhat apocalyptic in certain songs and really floors you, which sounds horrendous in principle but is actually quite serene, so I highly recommend this experience! If your gonna give it a try, I would say listen to the song “Floating on a Moment” as it sure did leave me floating at lots of moments. Nothing like a Terrible pun to end on but nonetheless, this LP is cool!!! [Billy Doyle]
7. Laci Kaye Booth – The Loneliest Girl in the World
I heard about Laci early this year – her stunning yet coarse vocals and poetic songwriting style immediately got me. A particular highlight on this album for me is ‘True Love’ – the lyrical intelligence of how she turns a simple phrase into having several meanings with gorgeous flowing melodies. She’s the perfect listen if you are considering running away to Tennessee and falling in love with a cowboy or like the idea of a Lana Del Rey and Carrie Underwood lovechild! [Emmie Avery]
8. mary in the junkyard – this old house
mary in the junkyard’s debut EP I think put a bit of a spell on us this year – I’m a big fan of the ghostly noises and little scratchy bits and the stories told through them! They’re lovely folks and I’m very excited to hear more of the new singles they’ve got coming out Vive le Junkyard! [Billy Ward]
9. Kendrick Lamar – GNX
This album was a surprise. But it’s no surprise it’s awesome. This obviously has to be on the top albums. It’s hard!! There are songs for every occasion on the LP, if you are pissed off and want to walk down the street with purpose and attitude, there’s a song for you. Or, if you want to drive a convertible Cadillac in LA during a summer sunset (which is something I can obviously relate to doing as a 19 year old student) there are songs that are also perfect for you! Some personal favourite tracks off the album for you to dip your toes in with if you haven’t already are: “dodger blue”, “Luther” and “Reincarnated.” Listen and enjoy 😉 [Billy Doyle]
10. Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense (film)
This isn’t technically this years release but I very much enjoyed seeing the 40th anniversary reissue of Stop making sense in the cinema this year It’s an amazing film- a nightmare to produce I’m sure but it’s a total testament to how talented and dynamic a band the Talking heads were. Seeing it on the big screen with a proper sound system only made it hit harder, really reminding me of the same sense of awe and inspiration that i felt when i first saw it years back! What a band! What a show! What songs! What stagecraft! [Billy Ward]
