Liz Brasher is now based in Memphis but she grew up in North Carolina, where she began singing at a young age, as she was raised by a family of singers performing in the Baptist Church. “My family is from the Dominican Republic so it was an all-Spanish congregation, much different than you would imagine a white Southern Baptist church to be,” says Liz.
She’s signed to Fat Possum and she’ll be releasing her debut album on the label in 2018. It was produced by Scott Bomar of Memphis soul-jazz band The Bo-Keys, and it features contributions from Bo-Keys horn players Kirk Smothers and Marc Franklin, as well as St. Paul and the Broken Bones organist Al Gamble. Ahead of the album, she’s releasing a two-song 7″ on Fat Possum this Friday (11/3), “Cold Baby” b/w “Painted Image.” “Cold Baby” is a big-sounding soul song, while “Painted Image,” which premieres in this post, is a much softer folk song. It features Memphis Symphony Orchestra cellist Jonathan Kirkscey, and Liz says “It’s about not giving up, not giving into the darkness.” You can listen to “Painted Image” and watch the video for “Cold Baby” below.
Liz will be in NYC soon to play Joe’s Pub on November 16. Tickets are on sale. Her only other upcoming date is a hometown show in Memphis in December.
