Lincoln Center‘s “Summer For the City” series is presenting over 200 free or pay-what-you-like events from June 12 – August 10. That includes concerts, movie screenings, dance parties, silent discos, burlesque, theatre, family events, and more.
This year’s lineup includes French jazz-funk legends Cortex, Rosanne Cash, Rafiq Bhatia, Steel Pulse, virtual reality experience The Dream Machine (conceived by Nona Hendryx), The Loser’s Lounge, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, and more.
Here are some highlights from Summer For the City’s 2024 schedule:
- The Dream Machine (June 12-30 @ Griffin Sidewalk Studio, David Geffen Hall): Dive headfirst into the future with full-scale virtual reality experiences, conceived by Nona Hendryx with designs by XR artist Sutu.
- Some Sing: A Juneteenth Celebration (June 19): Cultural curator Carl Hancock Rux commemorates the rich and varied history of Black American music for this campus-wide Juneteenth celebration.
- Joe McGinty & The Loser’s Lounge and Bill Coleman (June 20 @ The Dance Floor): World-famous jukebox band Joe McGinty & The Loser’s Lounge and DJ Bill Coleman capture the excitement of the disco era with a one-of-a-kind live show!
- Electric Fields & DEM MOB (June 22 @ Damrosch Park): Australian indigenous performers take center stage for this concert featuring dance pop sensations Electric Fields and the Hip-Hop collective DEM MOB.
- Rosanne Cash (June 23 @ Damrosch Park): Rosanne Cash, one of America’s leading songwriters and creative voices, performs a live set on the 30th anniversary of her classic album, The Wheel.
- Emily King (June 26 @ Damrosch Park): GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Emily King brings New York cool to meditations on recovering from a break-up with her new album Special Occasion.
- Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (June 26 @ David Rubenstein Atrium): The marriage of synthesis and voice allows for a heightened physicality in the way of ecstatic music in this one-of-a-kind performance at the Atrium. Part of The Dream Machine Experience.
- Cortex – ‘Le Jazz Est Mort’ (June 27 @ Damrosch Park): Among the numerous European groups that absorbed American Funk and Jazz influences during the 1970s, few are as celebrated, or as mysterious as Cortex.
- NYC Ska Orchestra (June 28 @ The Dance Floor): Get skanking on The Dance Floor with the 20-piece big band NYC Ska Orchestra, playing jazz, reggae and rocksteady hits of the ’50s and ’60s!
- Brasil Summerfest With Rogê (July 5 @ David Rubenstein Atrium): Brasilian samba star Rogê is a shining highlight of a series of concert sets presented by the curators from Brasil Summerfest.
- India Week (July 10 – 14): celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of Indian culture with a week-long extravaganza of events showcasing the country’s music, dance, art, cuisine, and more. Concerts include Sonny Singh, DJ Rajuju, and Parampara and SAZ ft. Sumitra Das Goswami.
- Rafiq Bhatia (July 26 @ The Underground at Jaffe Drive): Guitarist, composer, producer, and sound artist Rafiq Bhatia shares his meticulously crafted music.
- Steel Pulse (August 4 @ Damrosch Park): UK reggae legends Steel Pulse celebrate Jamaica Day with a career-spanning concert.
- Louie Vega & The Elements of Life (August 8 @ The Dance Floor): Nuyorican Soul DJ and producer Louie Vega fuses house, afro-beat, salsa, jazz, gospel and Hip-Hop into a dance floor sensation with Elements of Life!
- JACK Quartet (August 9 @ The Underground at Jaffe Drive): The award-winning JACK Quartet shares its unique and experimental approach to chamber music as part of the Living Music Underground series.
