John Grant on tour now, shares mockumentary ‘The Art of the Lie’

John Grant, who is currently on his first North American tour in seven years, has shared a The Art Of The Lie | The True Story of a Fake Film about Deception and Illusion, a 30 minute short film by Marc Wootton and Misha Manson-Smith. It falls somewhere between mockumentary and whatever you call the blurring of fiction and reality that Nathan Fielder and Sacha Baron Cohen do (the filmmakers actually worked with SBC on Comedy Central series Gooseberry). Here’s the synopsis:

Brendan Allen may well be the world’s worst documentary filmmaker—deluded, self-obsessed, and wildly unscrupulous. Gifted the chance to direct a rockumentary about the launch of John Grant’s latest album, Allen blows the opportunity and is fired from the project, but refuses to accept defeat.

Determined to finish the film on his own terms, he turns to increasingly desperate measures—first hiring doppelgängers to impersonate Grant before ultimately deciding to become Grant himself.

You can watch The Art of the Lie and listen to his 2024 album of the same name below.

John Grant’s tour, which is with Icelandic singer songwriter Arny Margret, wraps up this week with shows in Boston tonight, DC on Friday and at NYC’s Roulette on Saturday, April 12.
