Helado Negro announces new album & tour – listen to “LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros)”

Helado Negro (Roberto Carlos Lange) has announced new album Phasor, which will be out February 9 via 4AD. The record was partially inspired by getting to visit Salvatore Matirano’s SAL-MAR synthesizer at the University of Illinois. “I was enthralled by it,” Lange says. “It gave me special insight into what stimulates me. This pursuit of constant curiosity in process and outcome. The songs are the fruit, but I love what’s under the dirt. The unseen magical process. I don’t want everybody to see it because not everyone cares to see it. Some of us just want the fruit. I do. But I want to grow the fruit, too.”

The first single from the album is “LFO” which doesn’t stand for Low Frequency Oscillator, but “Lupe Finds Oliveros.” (Lange clearly knows about the “LFO” synth, though.) Lupe is Lupe Lopez, who built guitar amps for Fender in the 1950s, while Oliveros is acclaimed minimalist composer and electronic music icon Pauline Oliveros.

“Lupe’s amps are sought after, her care and touch apparently harnessed a special sound from this design,” Langesays. “I fell in love with this story and this legacy and the mythology surrounding it. How craft touches us so deeply in the smallest ways. Deep care for the littlest things makes all the difference.” Watch the video, which Lange directed, below.

Helado Negro has also announced a 2024 tour that hits NYC at Webster Hall on April 24. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, October 20 at 10 AM local time. Check out his full schedule below.
