Guided by Voices are celebrating their 40th anniversary this weekend in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio with two concerts also featuring Dinosaur Jr, Built to Spill, Heartless Bastards, and Kiwi Jr. To mark the occasion, they’ve finally made their debut EP, 1986’s Forever Since Breakfast, available on streaming services. If you’ve never heard it, a couple things are notable. Though the band would gain notoriety in the early-’90s for their lo-fi sound, this is clear, mid-fi “college rock,” not dissimilar to the records they make in 2023. It’s also remarkable to listen and discover how much of Pollard’s signature songwriting and melodic style was right there from the start. Listen below.
Following the celebration in Dayton this weekend, GBV will be on tour this fall, including a show at Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall on October 7. All dates are listed below.
