Golden Apples is the Philly band led by Russell Edling (ex-Kite Party), and on their just-announced album Bananasugarfire, Russell is joined by a handful of other familiar faces from the Philly music scene, including Mimi Gallagher (Nona, Year of Glad, Eight), Melissa Brain (Amanda X), and Matthew Scheuermann (The Sidekicks, Lowercase Roses). (Russell, Mimi, and Melissa have also all played together in Dave Tomaine’s Cave People collective.) The album comes out October 27 via Lame-O Records (pre-order).
Bananasugarfire was recorded across three locations–Metal Shop with Zack Robbins (of Superheaven, Slaughter Beach Dog, and Spirit of the Beehive), The Bunk with Matt Schimelfenig (of Gladie and Three Man Cannon), and at Russell and Mimi’s home–and Russell says, “This record really feels like the band. My favorite parts of the album are where I can hear someone else’s idea taking form, an idea I never would have arrived at. I wanted to get the best of both worlds: to properly record with the band in the studio and then spend a bunch of time also tinkering around on my own like I did with the first record, but this time Mimi was there in the basement tinkering with me.”
The first single is “Waiting For A Cloud,” a gorgeously swirling blend of jangle pop guitars, sunshine pop harmonies, and a psychedelic haze. “I think Waiting For A Cloud’ is about how love is truly magical, how it defies all odds and obstacles and totally overpowers sadness and doubt,” Russell says. “Almost unprovoked, true love simply arrives and suddenly the whole world feels different. It is imperfect, it is unpredictable, but as Daniel Johnston put it, true love will find you in the end.” Listen and watch the Craig Scheihing-directed video below.
