Drug Church have announced that they’ll follow 2022’s great Hygiene with their fifth album, PRUDE, on October 4 via Pure Noise Records. It was produced and recorded by longtime collaborator Jon Markson, and it features 10 songs in 28 minutes that the band is promising to be more of the Drug Church you know and love. “The goal is to put out good records that sound like we do,” says vocalist Patrick Kindlon. “We’re not trying to do an OK Computer.” We have an exclusive neon violet vinyl variant available in the BV shop, limited to 300. About PRUDE‘s lyrical content, Patrick explains: “I’m hesitant to say this album is more emotional, but I think there’s definitely some emotional songs on the record. I wanted to avoid some of the topics I’ve been hammering for years, but I almost can’t, I’m limited to what interests me, or upsets me, or grabs my attention. So there’s certainly classic Drug Church stuff–people derailing their lives, a strong pull to some type of individualism, frustration with mob mentality, this idea that maybe community isn’t what it’s sold as–but I would say that this album approaches it from sort of a sad storytelling way. This one feels more earnest to me.”
It features the band’s 2023 single “Myopic,” as well as the just-released “Demolition Man,” which, as promised, is that classic Drug Church mix of barked hardcore, alt-rock riffage, and sardonic lyricism. It’s “a song about envying dogs because they know what they’ve gotta do each day,” Patrick says. “I’m sure dogs are often confused, but they always have the north star of instinct. People live without it.” It comes with a video that was directed by Alex Backes and stars the band alongside Biff Wiff, who you know from I Think You Should Leave, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and more. Having just played Sound and Fury, Drug Church have two NY/NJ shows this weekend–Long Island’s Amityville Music Hall on Saturday (7/20) with Soul Blind, Family Dinner, and Victory Garden, and NJ’s Salty’s Beach Bar on Sunday (7/21) with Soul Blind, In 2 Again, Private Mind, and Capillary–and they also play Riot Fest, Louder Than Life, Furnace Fest, Aftershock, and Best Friends Forever.
