Citizen have announced their fifth album, Calling The Dogs, due October 6 via Run For Cover. We’ve got an exclusive blue & red swirl vinyl variant, limited to just 400 copies and up for pre-order now. Check out a mock-up below.
Following three albums with Will Yip and 2021’s self-produced Life In Your Glass World, the new album was produced by Rob Schnapf. Rob’s best known to many as Elliott Smith’s frequent producer, but he also has a history of working with punk/emo bands looking to make something a little prettier sounding (Saves The Day, Joyce Manor, Angel Du$t, etc), and that’s exactly what Citizen do on new single “If You’re Lonely.” Its catchy, breezy instrumentals are offset by vocalist Mat Kerekes’ trademark percussive delivery, and it culminates in one of the band’s most instantly-satisfying choruses. It’s yet another step forward from a band who have never once repeated themselves.
Mat says, “I grew up around a narcissistic parent and absorbed a lot of that behavior over time, negatively affecting people close to me. ‘If You’re Lonely’ is about recognizing that, growing from it, and becoming a reliable shoulder to lean on.” The Rachel Rinehardt-directed video plays on those themes, with Citizen practicing in a suburban garage as family drama ensues all around them. Calling The Dogs is also Citizen’s first album made with recent touring members Ben Russin (Title Fight) on drums and Mason Mercer (Muscle Before Paradise, Free At Last) on guitar.
Citizen have also announced a lengthy North American tour for this fall with Narrow Head and Modern Color and a Europe/UK tour for 2024. Tickets go on sale this Friday (7/21).
The tour hits Brooklyn on November 18 at Warsaw. All dates are listed below.
