Charli XCX has shared a new single from her highly anticipated Music, Fashion, Film which is out next month. Over a driving, guitar-forward indie backing, Charli talks her way through the verses, no rhyming, opening with:
I used to lick cream off strawberries in the summer
And maybe I fucked your dad
Just kidding, I’m only saying that for effect
But my point is I think people can change
I used to jump on trampolines with no underwear on
And now I basically just wear trousers
The very catchy chorus she sings, “Here’s the truth, and I gotta be honest
I’m not a bad girl anymore…Wink, wink, wink, wink.” The song structure and style reminds me a little of, and this is a deep pull, The Teenagers’ 2005 early blog-era hit “Homecoming.”
The video, directed by regular collaborator Aidan Zamiri, is just as playful, saucy and cheeky as the lyrics, maybe moreso. As usual she’s having her cake and eating it too — feasting, really — and you can watch that below.
Music, Fashion, Film is out July 24 (preorder in the BV Shop) and will be on tour this fall with Underscores opening, including two Brooklyn shows at Barclays Center on September 14 & 15. All dates are below.
