Singer-songwriter Anastasia Coope has announced she’s signed to Jagjaguwar who will release her debut album, Darning Woman, on May 24. (She is also the first signing to Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber’s new artist management company.) She produced the album herself. “I was able to envision a room of things happening, rather than me just building something,” Coope says. “This record was me starting to think spatially about music.”
The first single from Darning Woman is “He is On His Way Home, We Don’t Live Together,” a tapestry of haunting, out-there psychedelic folk. It features Matthew J Rolin on guitar and Patrick Shiroish on piano, and could appeal to fans of Animal Collective, Joanna Newsom or Broadcast. The video, directed by Grace Conrad, suits the song well and you can watch that below.
Coope also has a few live dates coming up, including tonight (2/27) at Trans-Pecos with Asher White, Liz Durette and Moon Diagrams (DJ), plus LA’s 2220 Arts + Archives on March 13 and a record release show at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on May 31. She’ll also open for Lael Neale in NYC (Public Records on April 12) and Boston (Lilypad on April 13).
