TOPS, Puro Instinct, Jerry Paper @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Montreal’s TOPS make slinky pop that seems to come from the limbo land of post-disco, pre Big ’80s when Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac were trying to figure out their next move. We’re bummed that original tourmate Molly Nilsson had visa problems and couldn’t make it to the U.S. but Puro Instinct make for a good double feature. As for opener Jerry Paper… a little goes a long way.
(Grateful) Dead & Company @ MSG
While the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well shows are behind us, three of the four core members (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann) are continuing on as Dead & Company with John Mayer. This is their second of three MSG shows.
Phil Lesh & Friends @ The Capitol Theatre
If you’d like to see a Dead set at a smaller venue and without John Mayer, Phil Lesh & Friends at The Cap will have you covered.
Bernie Fest feat. Janeane Garofalo, Mark Normand, Aparna Nancherla, Matt Koff & more @ Cameo Gallery
This is a fundraiser for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign featuring a whole bunch of very funny folks. Expect the unexpected…and maybe some surprise guests.
DVA, Christopher Tignor @ Trans-Pecos
Czech-based Northern Spy-signed experimental band DVA (not to be confused with the UK producer on Hyperdub of the same name) returns to NYC tonight. Opening is Christopher Tignor, a frequent This Will Destroy You collaborator and a member of Wires Under Tension.
Youssou N’Dour @ Terminal 5
Acclaimed Senegalese singer-songwriter, activist, politician (even an occasional actor), N’Dour remains a joyous musical force 30 years into his career.
Ben Folds, Ymusic @ The Paramount
Piano pop dude Ben Folds teamed with classical sextet yMusic for this year’s So There. Catch their version of chamber pop live tonight.
Everything Is Terrible! @ The Bell House
In this YouTube age, there are no shortage of weird/wrong VHS-era videos floating around, but few have the curatorial taste and demented affinity for the stuff like the folks at Everything is Terrible!. What makes them a few cuts above isn’t just finding this crap, but also editing and juxtaposing it into something that takes on a funny, surreal and occasionally nightmarish quality.
