Angel Olsen, Heron Oblivion @ Town Hall
Angel Olsen is more popular than ever thanks to last year’s great My Woman (which we named the #1 album of 2016), and she recently followed that album with the rarities comp Phases, which is as good as any of her proper albums. This week she plays three NYC shows with psych-rock supergroup Heron Oblivion, whose debut album on Sub Pop was also one of the stronger albums of 2016.
Spoon, White Reaper @ Brooklyn Steel
Indie rock elder statesmen Spoon have managed to stay relevant (and good) for more than two decades, no mean feat. That includes this year’s enjoyable Hot Thoughts. This is the second of two nights at Brooklyn Steel, and they’ll also play A Prairie Home Companion this weekend (taping at NYC’s Town Hall).
The Hold Steady @ Brooklyn Bowl
For the second year in a row, literate bar rockers The Hold Steady are celebrating the holidays with a run of shows at Brooklyn Bowl. This is the first of four shows, and the band is promising “good friends, good times and great surprises” at each one. Advance tickets are sold out but there will be limited admission at doors.
Beach Slang, Dave Hause, Homeless Gospel Choir @ Gramercy Theatre
Beach Slang have put out two full lengths, two EPs, and tons of covers in the three years they’ve been in a band, which gives them plenty of material to pull from tonight. Their shows are always life-affirming, and tonight should be no different.
Krallice, Geryon, Hathenter, Kevin Hufnagel @ Saint Vitus
Local experimental black metal staples Krallice have been super prolific lately, having released three full-lengths in the past 12 months (including one that’s a collaboration with Neurosis’ Dave Edwardson). This is one of two more hometown shows they have this year.
‘L.A.M.F.’ tribute with Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Clem Burke (Blondie), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Surprise Guests @ The Bowery Electric (two shows)
Last year, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers‘ classic (and only) LP, 1977’s L.A.M.F., was performed in full with impressive guests, including Heartbreakers member Walter Lure and Clem Burke of Blondie. The album turns 40 this year, and both Walter and Clem are taking part in performances of the album once again to celebrate its anniversary. This year also includes Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock, plus surprise guests. They’re doing two shows at Bowery Electric tonight and one at MHOW tomorrow.
The Suitcase Junket, Upstate Rubdown @ Rough Trade
The Suitcase Junket is a one-man band who made instruments out of found and repurposed objects and uses them to blend garage rock and Americana. It’s a pretty unique thing, and it sounds like the kind of thing that’s even more impressive live than recorded.
Cannibal Corpse, Power Trip, Gatecreeper @ Irving Plaza
Death metal vets Cannibal Corpse released Red Before Black earlier this month, and they’re on tour now with two killer younger bands. Power Trip recently released Nightmare Logic, the best thrash album of 2017, and Gatecreeper dropped Sonoran Deprivation last year on Relapse. This show was moved from Stage 48.
Squeeze @ The Capitol Theatre
Still led by gifted songwriting duo Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, Squeeze bring their large catalog of classics (and songs from new album The Knowledge) to Port Chester.
“The Hum” with Greta Kline (of Frankie Cosmos), Mirah, Emmy the Great, Kaki King, Anna Wis, Adeline (of Escort) @ Brooklyn Bazaar
It’s the holiday edition of The Hum and the lineup is pretty stellar this time. Proceeds benefit charity WIN (Women In Need).
Habibi, Surfbort, Diet Choke @ Baby’s All Right
You may have heard Habibi’s song “Tomboy” in the most recent episode of Showtime series SMILF. Catch them tonight along with the wild Surfbort tonight.
Judy Collins @ Joe’s Pub
Folk icon Judy Collins pays tribute to the great Stephen Sondheim with this Joe’s Pub run that goes through Thursday.
Bridget Everette @ Joe’s Pub
With an Amazon pilot that will hopefully become a series, Bridget Everette could soon be a lot more well-known, so don’t miss a chance to catch her unexpurgated live show with backing band The Tender Moments.
