UK singer songwriter made a pivot from English faery folk to folk-inspired indie rock on her first album for Sub Pop, which has her backed by The Big Moon. The same will happen tonight, with The Big Moon playing an opening set as well.
Iron and Wine @ NY Housing Works
Iron & Wine is back on Sub Pop for his new upcoming album Beast Epic, which is being touted as something of a return to form to his early days. Ahead of his proper tour, he plays this intimate benefit show for HIV/AIDS victims.
The Districts, Sam Evian, Soccer Mommy @ Bowery Ballroom
Philly-based rockers The Districts just released their new album Popular Manipulations last week and celebrate tonight with Sam Evian (aka Celestial Shore singer Sam Owens) and Soccer Mommy (aka Sophie Allison who just released her album last week, too).
Maria Bamford, Jackie Kashian The Bell @ House (2 shows)
Maria Bamford, who mined some dark personal material into terrific (and healing) standup as well as her Netflix series Lady Dynamite, plays early and late sets tonight (and one on Thursday).
Bomba Estereo @ Irving Plaza
Before they open for Arcade Fire this fall, cumbia band Bomba Estereo are on a headlining tour. This is their second of two Irving Plaza shows this week (sold out).
Bilal, DJ Reborn @ Marcus Garvey Park
Neo-soul great Bilal’s latest album is 2015’s In Another Life, which notably featured a song with Kendrick Lamar (whose To Pimp A Butterfly Bilal is on). He may not be supporting new music tonight, but he has tons of great material to pull from at this free show.
Meyhem Lauren, Tanboys, Sha Hef, Chris Rivers, HDBeenDope, Chelsea Reject & more @ Knitting Factory
Fresh off helping his longtime associate Action Bronson say goodbye to Webster Hall as we know it, Queens rap staple Meyhem Lauren plays his own smaller NYC show.
