Ultimate Painting, Juan Wauters, EZTV @ Bowery Ballroom
On their third album in as many years, Ultimate Painting’s Jack Cooper and James Haore’s styles begin to meld, making Dusk their most cohesive, enjoyable record yet. Tourmates EZTV draw from late ’70s jangly powerpop and make it their own, while Juan Waters is a troubador in the Jonathan Richman mold.
Bon Iver, Polica (duo) @ Pioneer Works
Bon Iver continue their 10-show NYC-area run in support of this year’s experimental, heavily electronic 22, A Million. This one has them once again at the unique space Pioneer Works, which is a truly special place to see them. It’s one of two shows on this run being opened by their pals Polica, who are playing as a duo and trying out some new material.
Andy Shauf, Chris Cohen @ Rough Trade
Two quality singer/songwriters, Andy Shauf and Chris Cohen, join forces for this show. They both released solid albums this year, The Party and As If Apart, respectively.
Insecure Men, Tess Parks @ Elvis Guesthouse
Insecure Men is the brand new solo project from Saul of Fat White Family and this is the project’s first live show. Also on the bill Tess Parks who made an album with Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Yoshimio/Ikue Mori/Okkyung Lee, Kill Alters, Overishins @ Saint Vitus
Vitus hosts a night of quality experimental music, headlined by the trio of Boredoms’ Yoshimio, no wave legend Ikue Mori, and avant-garde cellist Okkyung Lee.
American Wrestlers, Varsity @ Baby’s All Right
American Wrestlers started out as the solo project of ex-Working For A Nuclear Free City guitarist Gary McClure, but now they’re a full band and this year’s Goodbye Terrible Youth is a much fuller album than Gary’s self-recorded debut. If you’re going tonight, indie pop band Varsity are worth checking out too.
Helen Money, Psalm Zero, Bambara @ Trans-Pecos
Helen Money, the cellist who often tours with metal bands, plays Trans-Pecos tonight with art-metallers Psalm Zero and noise rockers Bambara. Sounds like a cool night all around.
Cindy Wilson (The B-52s), Jennifer Vanilla Girls, Kristin Kontrol (DJ) @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
A founding member of new wave greats The B-52’s, Cindy Wilson just released a solo EP that features covers of Broadcast and Junior Senior (eclectic!). She plays tonight and Kristin Kontrol (aka Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls) will do an opening DJ set.
Hamish Kilgour, Edward Korft, Kleenex Girl Wonder, Overlord, The Hell Yeah Babies @ Pianos
The Clean’s Hamish Kilgour headlines this night of indie rock featuring cult artist Kleenex Girl Wonder and the underrated Overlord.
