Lydia Loveless’ latest album Real is a badass dose of alt-country with a punk edge. Tonight’s her first NYC show since its release.
Margo Price, Sam Outlaw @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Another great alt-country option tonight is Margo Price. Margo was one of 2016’s biggest alt-country breakouts. She just landed at #3 on Rough Trade Shops’ top 100 albums of the year and we suspect that’s not the last of Margo we’ll be seeing on AOTY lists.
Mount Moriah, Jake Xerxes Fussell @ Rockwood Music Hall
Oneeee last bit of alt-country, but more on the indie-rock side: Mount Moriah return to NYC in continued support of this year’s very good How to Dance on Merge Records.
Wild Beasts, Porcelain Raft @ Le Poisson Rouge
Wild Beasts‘ fifth album Boy King pulls off the highwire act of going somewhere new while still sounding like themselves. This is their second of two NYC shows this week.
Holy Wave, Savants, Dances, Chasms @ Shea Stadium
Austin’s Holy Wave are on the more gentle side of psych rock, urging you to take a strange trip but in a very comfy chair. Their new album Freaks of Nurture came out back in the spring.
Members of Blondie, Replacements, MC5 & Heartbreakers play ‘LAMF’; Handsome Dick Manitoba; DJ Jonathan Toubin & more @ The Bowery Electric (2 shows)
To raise money for ’80s NYC columnist Stephen Saban, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, some punk legends are teaming up to play the Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers album L.A.M.F. in full at three NYC shows this week. This is show two (8 PM) and three (10 PM), and both also have another NYC punk legend, The Dictators’ Handsome Dick Manitoba.
Nicolas Jaar @ Webster Hall
Now that Darkside is behind him, Nicolas Jaar is back at it as a solo musician and his new album Sirens is very good. Tonight he begins a sold-out three-night run at Webster Hall.
Richard Thompson @ City Winery (2 shows)
With 50 years of material to choose from, the great Richard Thompson plays two “all request” shows tonight. Sold out.
Amy Rigby @ HiFi
Amy Rigby’s delightful 1996 album, Diary of a Mod Housewife, celebrates its 20th anniversary with its first-ever vinyl release, and two nights at HiFi bar. This is night 1. We’re hoping Wesley Stace shows up for “Beer and Kisses.”
In Flames, Hellyeah, From Ashes To New
In Flames are one of the definitive Swedish melodeath bands, and this year’s Battles is basically what you expect from them. That’s not a bad thing at all.
