While we’d argue that music is always better in a small club, some bands excel at the Big Outdoor Show and Tame Impala are one of them, with trippy visuals/lightshow added to their spacey, summery vibe. If you’re going to this sold-out show don’t miss Swedish psych-rock greats Dungen who open.
Florence and the Machine, Grimes @ Barclays Center
Florence + the Machine and Grimes put out two of 2015’s best, most forward-thinking pop albums, so it’s a real treat to see them back to back. This is night 2 of 2.
The Jayhawks, Folk Uke @ Bowery Ballroom
Midwest Americana greats The Jayhawks, who released Paging Mr. Proust earlier this year, are skilled musicians and songwriters, they’ve got a wealth of great songs to pull from tonight.
Antibalas, Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio), Ida Hawk, Cochemea Gastelum (of The Dap-Kings) @ Brooklyn Bowl
Antibalas’ monthly Brooklyn Bowl residency rolls on, tonight with guests/collaborators TV on the Radio guitarist Kyp Malone, Dap Kings saxophonist Cochemea Gastelum and more.
John Doe, Jesse Dayton @ City Winery
John Doe, co-founder of legendary LA punk band X, recently released his solo album The Westerner and Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk, his literary debut. He’ll pull from his extensive catalog of X and solo songs (and maybe a cover or two) tonight.
Cosmicide, Lip Talk @ C’mon Everybody
Miss mid-’00s band Secret Machines? Check out Brandon Curtis’ new group Cosmicide who don’t stray too far from his old band’s widescreen, post-punky rock. Tonight’s the second of their June residency shows.
Just Blaze & friends @ Coffey Park (Red Hook)
The free SummerStage shows at Coffey Park continue tonight with the great hip hop producer Just Blaze, who’s done beats for Jay Z, Dipset, and many more. He’s on fire at the moment, having produced Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar’s recent song “Freedom.”
Chastity Belt, IAN SWEET, Harmony Tividad (of Girlpool) @ Market Hotel
This is a sweet (if sold-out) show featuring three talented groups on the Hardly Art roster: clever Seattle band Chastity Belt, the punky pop of Colleen Green, and Brooklyn’s IAN SWEET. Girlpool’s Harmony Tividad opens with a solo set.
Plague Vendor, The Garden, Kim and The Created @ Rough Trade
Epitaph labelmates Plague Vendor and The Garden are both bands you probably won’t forget seeing. The former makes theatrical garage punk that’s like early White Stripes with Refused’s stage presence, and the latter put punk, post-punk, and hip hop into a truly weird blend.
Valkyrie, Lillake @ Saint Vitus Bar
Georgia guitar-slingers Valkyrie, who feature Pete Adams of Baroness and his brother Jake, released the excellent Shadows last year.
Unlocking The Truth @ The Studio at Webster Hall
First noticed on the streets of New York playing metal at a very young age, Unlocking the Truth were plucked into unexpected notoriety and signed to a million dollar contract with Sony which they eventually negotiated their way out of, and are now the subject of a new documentary. Tonight, though, they celebrate the release of their debut LP, Chaos.
Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band @ St. George Theatre (Staten Island)
One of two living Beatles, Ringo Starr brings His All Starr Band (Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, Steve Lukather, Richard Page, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette) to the NYC-area for three shows this month. This is the third.
Viyaj Iyer Trio @ Jazz Standard
Forward-thinking modern jazz musician Vijay Iyer begins a residency at Jazz Standard tonight that runs through Sunday (6/19). Earlier this year, he released the acclaimed collaborative album with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke.
