Grandaddy, Beverly @ Le Poisson Rouge
Grandaddy‘s comeback album, Last Place, is out this week and finds Jason Lytle and crew picking up right where they left off over a decade ago. The band’s easygoing style, fuzzy guitars, arpeggiating synths and Lytle’s world weary vocals, is ageless and Lytle’s lyrical themes of alienation in a world of creeping urban development and technological advances, seem more pertinent than ever. This is the first of four NYC release shows this week.
Robyn Hitchcock & Yo La Tengo @ Rough Trade
Onetime Soft Boys frontman Robyn Hitchcock made his solo debut with 1981’s Black Snake Diamond Röle, a stone-cold psychedelic pop classic, and cuts like “The Man Who Invented Himself,” “Acid Bird,” “I Watch the Cars” and “Do Policeman Sing?” still sound great 35 years later. He’s playing it in full, with Yo La Tengo as his backing band, tonight and tomorrow (at Bowery Ballroom). If he wants to throw in some songs from his terrific forthcoming album, that’s ok by us.
Hinds @ Space Ninety 8
Hinds have their own line of clothing which they designed for Urban Outfitters. To celebrate Hinds have flown over from Madrid to play UO’s Space Ninety 8 in Williamsburg.
Dirty Fences, Daddy Long Legs, Bob Mann & The Rolling Thunder, Marching Teeth, Oyasaba @ Brooklyn Bazaar
A whole bunch of garage rockers are getting together to put on a show to help their friend Jenn Warren’s legal defense fund. “You don’t need to her to come” say Dirty Fences.
Leif Vollebekk, Baskery @ Mercury Lounge
Montreal singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk just released new album, Twin Solitude, which features contributions from Olivier Fairfield from Timber Timbre, Barr Brothers harpist Sarah Page and guitarist Shahzad Ismaily. This is the NYC record release show.
John Doe @ City Winery
John Doe, co-founder of legendary LA punk band X, returned last year with a new solo album and his first-ever book. He and his X partner Exene Cervenka are opening some dates for Blondie and Garbage later this year, but first he’s doing the solo thing again tonight.
George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic @ BB King’s
The legendary and forever-relevant George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic are back on the road for their “Mardi Gras Madness” tour. They land in NYC tonight for the fifth annual “Funky Fat Tuesday” show.
Greg Graffin (of Bad Religion) @ Rockwood Music Hall
Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin is releasing his first solo album in 11 years, Millport, this March. First he’s doing a three-night run at NYC’s intimate Rockwood Music Hall — this being night two.
