Joyce Manor, The Hotelier, Crying @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
There are a lot of good rock shows in NYC tonight, but this might have the most stacked lineup start to finish of all of them. Openers Crying just released their debut LP on Run For Cover, and it manages to combine Rush and Van Halen with modern-day indie pop. The Hotelier put out the passionate, ambitious emo album Goodness earlier this year, and Joyce Manor just returned with Cody, which is kinda somewhere between The Smiths and Jawbreaker, and it’s JM’s best yet.
Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees w/ Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, The Milk Carton Kids @ Town Hall
Jesuit Refugee Service is putting on the Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees tour this month “to raise awareness of the unprecedented worldwide refugee crisis.” The lineup is pretty impressive, especially because of special guest Robert Plant, who remains a must-see artist.
Regina Spektor @ Rough Trade
Regina Spektor recently returned with Remember Us To Life, and it’s another solid dose of her unique piano pop. Tonight she plays a very intimate NYC show.
Amy Schumer @ Madison Square Garden
Back in June, Amy Schumer was the first female comedian to ever sell out MSG. Her tour returns to MSG again tonight.
The Blow, Pauline Oliveros @ National Sawdust
This is the first of The Blow’s “WOMANPRODUCER” events at National Sawdust, tonight with them performing live, along with a performance and conversations with accordionist and early electronic innovator Pauline Oliveros.
Shovels and Rope, Matthew Logan Vasquez @ Bowery Ballroom
All the way from Johns Island, SC, indie country couple Carrie Ann Heart and Michael Trent stomp and holler as Shovels and Rope, who play tonight with Delta Spirit’s Matthew Logan Vasquez.
Andrew VanWyngarden & James Richardson (DJs) @ Dumbo Loft
Part of the Murrmr concert series, tonight’s a DJ party with MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden and James Richardson (who is in the live lineup of the band).
Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
SWEET w/ Seth Herzog @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog hosts this long-running comedy night that always features great guests.
mewithoutYou, Needle Points @ Knitting Factory
mewithoutYou turn 15 this year, and in celebration of that, they’re playing a set that pulls from every album they’ve ever done. That means we’ll hear their early heavy post-hardcore stuff, their mid-2000s art rock era, and the indie-folk they made after that, plus last year’s great Pale Horses, which kind of combines all of their sounds.
Failure @ Webster Hall
Before the grungegaze boom, before Deftones, Failure was putting a space-rock twist on the alternative rock of the ’90s, and it’s proved to be very influential. Tonight they’ll play their album Fantastic Planet in full for its 20th anniversary.
KING, Nick Hakim @ Le Poisson Rouge
Earlier this year, LA trio KING released their retro-futuristic debut album We Are KING, which pulls from the R&B/soul sounds of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, while still sounding forward-thinking.
Steely Dan @ Beacon Theatre
Steely Dan are in the midst of their ten-show run at Beacon Theatre tonight and tonight will play what is widely regarded to be their materwork, Aja, in full…plus “selected other favorites.
Dave East @ Highline Ballroom
Harlem rapper Dave East is signed to Nas’ Mass Appeal Records, and his debut album Kairi Chanel features appearances by Fabolous, Cam’ron and Beanie Sigel, so you can probably guess what city and era of rap Dave East is most attached to. But he’s not totally stuck in the past — his album also features 2 Chainz and it sounds as great today as it probably would’ve sounded in 2002.
Tancred, Narc Twain @ Mercury Lounge
Tancred is the project of Now, Now guitarist Jess Abott, and earlier this year she put out her first album for Polyvinyl, Out of the Garden. It sounds closer to something like Speedy Ortiz (who she toured with and whose singer Sadie Dupuis appears in her recent video) than Now, Now, and Jess does that sound well.
Birthmark, Kirt Debique, Ashcan Orchestra, Abraham King @ Shea Stadium
While Nate Kinsella is currently playing some pretty big stages as a member of American Football, tonight you can catch him in a very small room with his Birthmark project. It’s more of an art rock thing than AF’s math-emo, and it’s very good stuff.
Lupe Fiasco @ BB King’s
Lupe Fiasco was saying he’d release three albums in 2016, but now the year is almost over and he’s saying in fact he probably won’t release any. (Bummer.) Maybe he’ll let us hear some new stuff tonight anyway?
Adia Victoria, Living Hour @ Baby’s All Right
Nashville singer/songwriter Adia Victoria released her debut album Beyond the Bloodhounds earlier this year on Canvasback, and tonight she returns to NYC in support of it.
Louis CK @ NJPAC
Once an underground sensation, Louis CK has become one of the biggest comedians in America — by doing it his way.
