PJ Harvey @ Terminal 5
PJ Harvey returned this year with The Hope Six Demolition Project, which, musically, is up a pretty similar alley to her 2011 late-career reinvention Let England Shake. She always puts on a great show, and tonight should be no different. Night 2 of 2.
Dawn Richard, River Tiber, Starchild and The New Romantic @ House of Yes
This month’s NYC Red Bull Sound Select show is headlined by the shapeshifting R&B great D∆WN (aka Dawn Richard), who recently released a Kingdom-produced EP and who has been putting out singles off a forthcoming full length all year. The openers are River Tiber and Blood Orange collaborator Starchild.
Big Eyes, Pox, Teen Vice @ Alphaville
Big Eyes are one of NYC’s best-kept secrets, as far as melodic punk goes. They’re releasing their new album Stake My Claim this week.
Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Pink Mexico, Holy Tunics @ Baby’s All Right
If you feel fatigue with the garage rock genre, you’re not alone, but Frankie and the Witch Fingers cut through the garage glut like a hot knife on butter, with great songs, spirited playing you can hear even on computer speakers, and heaps of attitude.
Dawes @ Rough Trade
Folk rockers Dawes released their latest album All Your Favorite Bands last year, and tonight they return to NYC for a free in-store. If you can’t make it, you can stream it live at 6 PM.
Foster Care, Talk Sick Brats, Spewing Cum, Alien Trilogy @ The Living Gallery
It’s a night of grimy garage punk, headlined by criminally underrated Foster Care, plus Houston’s Talk Sick Brats, and more.
Ilana Glazer, Julian Kiani, Phoebe Robinson @ Union Hall
This is a “loose-chill-fringe-gritty one-off show where these three comedians work out some new material.” Unsurprisingly, sold out.
IYEZ, Mueran Humanos, Russian Baths @ Union Pool
Argentina-via-Berlin duo Mueran Humanos released Miseress via ATP last year which is another fine example of the crepuscular synthpop they make. This is their first NYC show in some time.
Cake Shop Comedy! @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
Seth Herzog’s SWEET: Stand Up Comedy Show @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog hosts this long-running comedy night that always features great guests.
Ask Me Another w/ Natasha Lyonne @ The Bell House
Ophira Eisengberg hosts NPR’s “rambunctious hour that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music.” Tonight’s guest is Orange is the New Black star Natasha Lyonee.
