You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Duran Duran, Tokimonsta @ Apollo Theater
MNDR is filling in for original DD keyboardist Nick Rhodes who has some family business to take care of back in the UK, but you still get the Le Bon/Taylor/Taylor…and all the hits.
Holy Fuck, Doomsquad @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The mid-’00s dance-punk scene is alive and well and living in Canada — Holy Fuck’s new platter ‘Congrats’ sounds like prime George W. Bush era jams. They play tonight with a younger band who are also keep that torch alive, Doomsquad.
Iron Chic, Dikembe, Slingshot Dakota, ROMP @ Aviv
This is a good bill all around, with melodic punk from Iron Chic, Dikembe and ROMP, and driving piano pop from Slingshot Dakota.
Reverend Horton Heat (solo), Dale Watson (solo) @ Highline Ballroom
Psychobilly king Reverend Horton Heat is still at it giving it is all, and ever remains the legend.
Jack & Amanda Palmer, Thor & Friends @ (le) poisson rouge
Earlier this year, Amanda Palmer released a covers album with her dad, Jack, called You’ve Got Me Singing. They’ll be singing up a storm together tonight. Thor Harris, of Swans and Shearwater, opens with his new combo.
Jeff Rosenstock, The Sidekicks, Winter Break, Binary Heart @ Sunnyvale Brooklyn
Jeff Rosenstock and The Sidekicks are two of the more fun indie-punk bands around these days, and they should make for a great double bill.
Long Beard, gobbinjr, Lunch Ladies, Rhea @ Silent Barn
Long Beard has a sound that’s somewhere between slowcore, folk, and dream pop. Last year’s Sleepwalker is a very solid debut album.
Alex Calder, Freak Heat Wave, Big Eater @ ALPHAVILLE
Alex Calder hails from Edmonton, Alberta, and was a member of Makeout Videotape, aka Mac DeMarco’s old band. Like Mac, he’s now on Captured Tracks and, if less crazy, has some of the same musical spriit.
Lucki @ S.O.B.’s
Chicago rapper Lucki‘s (fka Lucki Eck$) latest Son of Sam EP came out this March, and he returns to NYC tonight.
Cake Shop Comedy at Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
Seth Herzog’s SWEET: Stand Up Comedy Show @ The Slipper Room
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
Syd Straw, Cliff Westfall @ HiFi
A talented singer-songwriter with deep roots in the NYC scene (she sang on the Golden Palominos’ Visions of Excess), Syd Straw is probably best known for her terrific 1989 solo debut, Surprise. She’s a great storyteller too, and a chance to see her in a very intimate setting such as this shouldn’t be missed.
Red Bull Sound Select Presents: Big Freedia, Cakes Da Killa @ Baby’s All Right
Bounce queen Big Freedia brings the party like few others, and she continues to move up in the world (this year she collaborated with Beyonce). Cakes Da Killa is great well-matched support too.
Pavo Pavo @ Solar One Rooftop Films: Pitch Perfect
Part of Rooftop Films’ free LOL Movie Series, tonight features ‘Pitch Perfect’ and live music from Pavo Pavo (plus a comedian). Doors are at 7:45 PM, with live music at 8 PM, live comedy (comedians TBA) at 8:30 PM and the movie at 9 PM. You do need to RSVP.
