Mastodon, Eagles of Death Metal, Russian Circles @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Mastodon remain one of sludge metal’s biggest crossover bands in the world, and this year’s Emperor of Sand continues their trek into more accessible music. They’re on tour right now with two great openers: tongue-in-cheek rockers Eagles of Death Metal and post rockers Russian Circles.
Face to Face, Lost In Society @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Melodic punks Face to Face have been doing their thing since the early ’90s, and last year’s Protection on Fat Wreck Chords is just as ripping as their classic material. Their live show is still great too, and this tour is exciting since they’re playing more intimate venues than usual.
Father John Misty, Adam Green @ Brooklyn Steel
Opinions are split on FJM’s sprawling new album Pure Comedy, but its hard to deny his charms as a live performer. This is his second of three sold-out NYC shows this week, and first of two at Brooklyn Steel with Adam Green. He’ll be back in the area again later this year.
Omar Souleyman (le) poisson rouge
Prolific Syrian singer Omar Souleyman releases new album To Syria, With Love, in a few weeks via Mad Decent. The record has more techno elements than his previous works while delivering a personal ode to his home country. He celebrates its release tonight.
The Moonlandingz, Uni @ Rough Trade
A collaboration between Lias of Fat White Family and the Eccentronic Research Council, released their debut album, Interplanetary Class Classics, back in March. While wallowing in much the same filth as FWF, the vibe here is more “if we’re in the gutter, we might as well dance.” The record features Sean Lennon, his mom Yoko Ono and others…who knows who may show up to this show.
Justin Townes Earle, The Sadies, Sammy Brue @ Webster Hall
Long-running Canadian act The Sadies just released Northern Passages, the band’s 10th record, full of the band’s signature countrified heartland rock. They’re currently on tour with Justin Townes Earle both as openers and as Earle’s backing band.
Savoy Motel, Champagne Superchillen, Fascinations Grand Chorus @ WFMU Monty Hall
Nashville’s Savoy Motel, which features Cheap Time’s Jeffrey Novak and members of Heavy Cream, inhabit a weird sonic world that has one foot in glittery glam, and the other in minimal, twitchy post-punk, with everything southern-fried.
Wild Arrows, Grooms, Shapes in Calgary, Nicholas Nicholas @ Sunnyvale
This is a record release show for Brooklyn duo Wild Arrows’ new record, Dreamlike Dream, and also features terrific noisy/krauty Grooms (who should have a new album out soon).
Adrian Belew Power Trio @ Iridium
Adrian Belew has played with everyone from Bowie and King Crimson to Talking Heads and Nine Inch Nails. Here’s a chance to see his fretwork up close and personal as part of this “Power Trio” featuring drummer Eric Slick and his sister, bassist Julie.
