Whitney, Julie Byrne @ Rough Trade
Whitney’s debut album, Light Upon the Lake, was one of our favorite albums of 2015, a breezy update on ’70s Laurel Canyon pop. This warm-up show for their upcoming Australian/NZ tour is a scootch more intimate than their next NYC show which happens at Bowery’s soon-to-open Brooklyn Steel. If you’re going to this sold-out show, do get their early to catch Julie Byrne whose debut album is due out later this month on Ba Da Bing.
BADBADNOTGOOD, Dayme Arocena, Lady Wray Highline Ballroom
Canadian jazz/funk combo BADBADNOTGOOD lay down serious grooves and have become frequent collaborators in the world of hip hop (as well as in-demand remix artists). Tonight’s show also features Cuban soul/jazz artist Dayme Arocena and ex-Lady singer Lady Wray.
Title Fight, Give, Westpoint @ Knockdown Center
Title Fight have touched on hardcore, shoegaze, alternative rock and more over the years, most recently releasing Hyperview on ANTI- in 2015. They’re doing a a short tour this month with DC hardcore band GIVE and TF’s Kingston, PA neighbors Westpoint.
Pharoah Sanders, Shabaka & The Ancestors @ Le Poisson Rouge
Legendary spiritual jazz musician Pharoah Sanders played in Coltrane’s band and also put out plenty of classic records as a bandleader, and his influence can still be felt today on guys like Kamasi Washington. Tonight’s show is part of the 2017 Winter Jazzfest.
Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre
What’s the deal with these Beacon Theatre shows? It’s part of Jerry’s monthly residency, that’s what.
