Wilco @ Rough Trade
Having just released new LP Schmilco, Wilco play this impossibly tiny show at Rough Trade which you had to buy the record to get in (it’s sold out, natch).
Blake Mills, Karen O & Nick Zinner, Lucius, Janis Ian, Kaki King, Marc Ribot, Smokey Hormel, Julian Lage, Seth Herzog @ BRIC House
A very impressive lineup plays this benefit show for the D’Addario Foundation, “a non-profit organization that identifies the highest quality, most impactful instrument instruction programs in communities of need and awards grants and product donations to assist their growth and development.”
Lee “Scratch” Perry, Subatomic Sound System, Screechy Dan @ Brooklyn Bowl
Dub legend Lee “Scratch” Perry is 80 years old this year and still 100% eccentric (and genius). Tonight he’ll perform his classic ‘Super Ape’ in full. A famous late-starter, he’ll supposedly be on and off before midnight tonight.
Peter Hook & The Light @ Webster Hall
While he doesn’t seem to be able to stand his former New Order/Joy Division bandmates, Peter Hook has no problem playing the songs with his band The Light (that includes David Potts who sang in Hook’s band Monaco). Tonight they’ll perform both the Joy Division and New Order versions of ‘Substance’ in full.
‘Adam Green’s Aladdin’ @ Gramercy Theatre
Adam Green’s musical satire, Aladdin, has been available as an on-demand film for a while now but if you’d like to see it in a theater, with its creator playing a live show too, you’re in luck.
Ava Luna @ DUMO’s ‘Live At The Archway’
For the second year in a row, DUMBO is playing host to the Live At the Archway series, which is “a weekly cabaret below the Manhattan Bridge with free performances, beer, wine, and a magical, only-in-DUMBO setting.” Ava Luna play at 6 PM.
Explosions in the Sky, Julianna Barwick @ Terminal 5
Long-running post-rockers Explosions in the Sky returned earlier this year with Wilderness, which has the band in fine form. Recent live shows prove they’re still mesmerizing on stage too. This show is doubly cool because of ambient pop opener Julianna Barwick, who’s supporting this year’s great Will.
David Bazan, Lindsey Luff @ The Bell House
The man behind Pedro the Lion and Headphones released the very solid solo album Blanco earlier this year, which saw Bazan putting his unique spin on synthpop.
Band of Horses, White Denim @ Central Park SummerStage
Earlier this year, folk rockers Band of Horses released Why Are You OK, which was produced by Jason Lytle, featured J Mascis, and is probably the best album of the band’s major label period. Tonight they team up with another band with a taste for Southern rock, White Denim.
Adele @ MSG
Adele’s music brings people of all ages together like few popular singers do right now. For six nights this week, she’ll do just that at Madison Square Garden. This is night 3.
Mirah, Kid In The Attic @ The Owl Music Parlor
Alt-singer/songwriter Mirah has been putting out quality music for close to 20 years. Her latest album is 2014’s Changing Light.
Screeching Weasel, Bigwig, Furious George, CJ Ramone @ Irving Plaza
Screeching Weasel (or at least Ben Weasel’s current incarnation of the band) will celebrate their 30th anniversary tonight, and they’ll be playing My Brain Hurts in full for the occasion. It’s a night of veteran melodic punk rock all around, with NJ’s hardcore-ish Bigwig, Screeching Weasel’s ’90s-era Lookout! labelmates Furious George, and former Ramones bassist CJ Ramone. Some dates on this tour are with Screeching Weasel’s close pals The Queers, who aren’t on this show BUT…
The Queers, Svetlanas, The Fantastic Plastics, OC45, The Jukebox Romantics, Kyle Trocolla @ Saint Vitus
…The Queers will headline touring punk rock fest Upstart Fest at Saint Vitus tonight. Is it possible to see their set plus that Screeching Weasel show? Anyone gonna try?
Tourist, Jim E-Stack @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Tourist and Jim E-Stack is a solid double bill, and should have the dancefloors moving at MHOW all night.
Ace Enders, Aaron Gillespie, Vinnie Caruana @ The Studio at Webster Hall
It’s a night of solo sets from emo/post-hardcore singers, including The Early November’s Ace Enders, Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie, and The Movielife’s Vinnie Caruana.
Kesha @ Warsaw
Last in NYC for the Mad Decent Block Party, pop star Kesha continues her return to the stage with… a show at Warsaw? Seems weird, and still not sold out (which also seems weird).
