U.S. Girls, She-Devils, Idiot Glee @ Mercury Lounge
U.S. Girls, aka Meg Remy, made her 4AD debut last year with the terrific Half Free, her most refined — yet still highly charged — set of songs yet. She headlines this very solid triple bill with Montreal duo She-Devils and Kentucky’s Idiot Glee.
Klaus Johann Grobe, Grooms, Operator @ Shea Stadium
It’s the second of two BrooklynVegan presented shows with Swiss groove machine Klaus Johann Grobe. Tonight’s lineup is pretty killer, with Grooms and the Stereolab-ish band Operator. Hope to see you there!
Old 97’s, Heartless Bastards, BJ Barham @ Irving Plaza
A double dose of superior alt-country rock, Old 97’s and Heartless Bastards play their second of two NYC shows tonight.
La Luz, Las Rosas, High Waisted @ Market Hotel
Seattle’s finest surf band, La Luz are consistently one of the most fun live bands around and will likely take to Market Hotel’s confines like a fish to water.
Diamanda Galas @ Former St. Thomas The Apostle Church
Her voice is like no other. Avant-garde diva Diamanda Galas is performing new material at “Death Will Come and Will Have Your Eyes,” part of the Red Bull Music Academy. Second of three shows.
WALL, Bambara, Threats, Weeping Icon @ Berlin
For fans of dark post-punk, this show with locals WALL and Bambara is a good option.
Bill de Blasio benefit w/ Louis CK @ Brooklyn Bowl
Louis CK stumps for Mayor de Blasio tonight, and hopefully does a little standup too at this fundraiser.
Gary Numan @ Gramercy Theatre
With Tubeway Army and on solo hits like “Cars,” Gary Numan helped set the synthpop blueprint that’s still being followed today. This is his second of three NYC shows where he’ll be playing classic albums in full. Tonight: 1980’s ‘Telekon.’
Glenn Kotche @ National Sawdust
Wilco guitarist Glenn Kotche premieres his commission for percussion and string ensemble featuring Norwegian Grammy-award winning group 1B1.
The Posies @ Secret Location
With their first new LP in five years out next week, The Posies hit NYC on their “secret” tour where they’ll play an intimate show in a location known only to ticketholders.
Sinkane, Xander Ferreira & The True Love Tones @ Union Pool
DFA recording artist and Caribou collaborator Sinkane is going to be testing out new material this month at a three-show residency happening at Brooklyn’s Union Pool on Thursdays. Tonight’s the first.
Jenny Scheinman’s Mischief & Mayhem ft. Nels Cline, Jim Black, and Todd Sickafoose; Margaret Glaspy @ Le Poisson Rouge
Composer/violinist Jenny Scheinman headlines this show with her band Mischief & Mayhem, which features the immensely talented Nels Cline on guitar. Opening is up-and-coming singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy.
Half Waif, Zula, TIGUE, Twig Twig @ Baby’s All Right
Half Waif recently released their sophomore album Probable Depths, which is a nice dose of art pop that should appeal to fans of Julia Holter, My Brightest Diamond, and more. This is the release show.
Floating Points (live), FaltyDL @ Bowery Ballroom
Last year Floating Points released his great debut album, Elaenia, which was recorded with a full band and was closer to chilled-out jazz than his earlier electronic recordings. He’s on tour in support of it again with an 11-piece band. This is the first of two sold-out NYC shows this week.
Mark Pritchard & Jonathan Zawada: Under the Sun @ Red Bull Studios
Electronic musician Mark Pritchard releases his new album Under the Sun this week and it, among other things, features collaborations with Thom Yorke and Linda Perhacs. Tonight he’ll perform music from it with an “immersive audiovisual experience” made in collaboration with visual artist Jonathan Zawada, part of Red Bull Music Academy.
Fruit Bats, Promised Land Sound @ Rough Trade
Eric D Johnson briefly retired the Fruit Bats moniker but it’s back and the new FB album Absolute Loser comes out this week.
The Zombies @ Rough Trade
Baroque/psych pop as we know it wouldn’t exist without The Zombies, whose 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is one of the best and most influential examples of the genre. Tonight they play this 7 PM in-store which is free with a purchase of their new album Still Got That Hunger from the Rough Trade store.
Alice Cooper @ Capitol Theatre
Alice Cooper has put out some of the most memorable hard rock songs ever with “School’s Out,” “I’m Eighteen,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” and plenty of others. Recent shows have him playing the hits.
Bang On A Can: Performance by Arto Lindsay @ The Jewish Museum
Arto Lindsay is a veteran of the original no wave era, and he’s stayed great and prolific with now-classic solo material released in the ’90s and early ’00s.
New York Guitar Festival
Tonight’s NYGF show is at the Greene Space and it’s billed as “An evening of music and conversation with Rez Abbasi, Derek Gripper, Kaki King and Glenn Jones. Hosted by WNYC New Sounds’ John Schaefer.”
Jose James @ Blue Note (2 shows)
Neo-soul great Jose James is in the midst of a run at Blue Note, playing two shows a night through Sunday.
Kiki & Herb @ Joe’s Pub
Legendary lounge/cabaret duo Kiki and Herb (aka Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman) went into retirement in 2007 but they’re returning to the stage for this run called “Kiki and Herb: Seeking Asylum!” Sold out but a limited number of tickets given away free each night via lottery.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
