Thursday, PUP, The Hotelier, Jeff Rosenstock, Tony Molina @ McCarren Park
Jersey post-hardcore heroes Thursday returned last year, and their reunion shows have been at least as good as their initial run as a band. As if a Thursday reunion show in Brooklyn wasn’t exciting enough, this lineup is stacked with raucous Canadian punks PUP, heart-on-sleeve emo band The Hotelier, cult punk lifer Jeff Rosenstock, and indie rocker Tony Molina. This is a day show (2-8 PM) and it’s free with RSVP.
Punk Rock Bowling
The two-day Asbury Park edition of the Punk Rock Bowling festival wraps up today and today’s lineup is pretty awesome, with snot-nosed SoCal heroes NOFX, legendary UK band Buzzcocks, Jersey emo/hardcore innovators Lifetime, ska-core greats Leftover Crack, long-running DC ska band The Pietasters, Boston staples The New Darkbuster, NJ melodic hardcore vets Bigwig, and more.
Feist @ Town Hall
Pleasure, Feist’s first album in 6 years, is the rawest and darkest thing she’s ever released and has her favoring ambition over sticking to a formula that already works. It’s got some of the best songs of her career, and seeing her perform these songs live should be really special. This is the second of three shows at NYC’s Town Hall.
George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Main Source, DJ Marley Marl @ Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
George Clinton not only helped invent psychedelic funk and soul as we know it, but he’s an active, relevant artist today and signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. This bill is doubly exciting, as it’s got the second Main Source reunion show in NYC of 2017 (they hadn’t performed in over a decade prior to this year). This show is totally free and goes from 5-8 PM.
Hot 97 Summer Jam @ MetLife Stadium
The annual Hot 97 Summer Jam is stacked as ever. The main stage has hitmakers Migos, ’90s devotee Joey Bada$$, the relevant-again Fat Joe & Remy Ma, and more. The side stage has NYC’s fast-rising Young M.A and Dave East, hook-singer PnB Rock, the divisive Lil Yachty, and more.
Weedeater, Black Wizard, Serial Hawk @ Le Poisson Rouge
Sludgy stoners Weedeater are back in NYC tonight for a show that should be as crushing as ever. If you’re going tonight, it’s worth getting there early for Serial Hawk, who have a new album in the works.
Culture Abuse, QTY, Simon Doom @ Saint Vitus
Fun & noisy Bay Area punks Culture Abuse have been staying active since the release of their first full-length Peach back in April 2016, and they return to NYC tonight.
‘Church on Sundays’ ft. Meek Mill & friends @ Highline Ballroom
Though a lot of talk about Meek Mill is about his Drake beef, he remains a high-quality and prolific rapper. Tonight he plays this late (11 PM) show.
Chuck Ragan, Ben Rosenfield @ Rough Trade
When he’s not co-fronting Hot Water Music, Chuck Ragan makes folk music with all the same ruggedness of his punk band. This is his second of two NYC shows this weekend.
Twin Peaks, Ron Gallo @ Baby’s All Right
While some will be watching Twin Peaks, the wonderful and strange TV series, others will be at Baby’s watching Twin Peaks, the wild and free Chicago band, who play early and late shows tonight.
Nick Lowe, Eli Paperboy Reed @ City Winery
Ace songwriter, gifted producer and general diamond geezer, Nick Lowe has as many great stories as he has great songs. (A lot.) Expect both tonight.
Psychemagik, Love Tempo @ Dobbin St
Part of the “Good Roof” series at event space Dobbin St, you can dance the afternoon away into the night.
Bridget St. John, Sleepy Doug Shaw, Tim Shaw @ Union Pool
UK folk vet Bridget St. John plays NYC semi-regularly but this is, apparently, the first time she’s ever played with a full band.
Sasheer Zamata, Michelle Collins, Beth Stelling, Rob Haze, Adira Amram & The Experience @ The Bell House
This is “Sasheer Zamata’s Party Time” which is described as this: “Sasheer Zamata (SNL, This American Life) likes to party, spend time with friends and do shows. Watch her do all three of those things at the same time! There will be laughter, merriment, and probably a lot of booze.”
