Robyn Hitchcock, Emma Swift @ Grand Victory
Robyn was a highlight of both Bowie tributes this week, and now has two shows at the impossibly tiny Grand Victory. Just as entertaining between songs as when singing, folks who got tickets for this sold-out show are in for a treat.
Chargaux & Denitia Odigie; Sara Landeau (The Julie Ruin) & Jane Boxall; Jen Turner & Nico Turner @ Manhattan Inn
It’s another installment of The Hum, a series of unique all-women collaborative concerts. Most excitingly, this one includes The Julie Ruin guitarist Sara Landeau.
Michael Kiwanuka, KaiL Baxley @ Rough Trade
Soulful UK singer Michael Kiwanuka recently announced that he’ll release his sophomore album, Love & Hate, on May 27. While we’ll have to wait ’til then to hear it, perhaps he’ll preview some of it at his NYC shows this week. He plays Rough Trade tonight and Bowery Ballroom tomorrow, both of which are pretty intimate places for him (and not surprisingly sold out).
Ringo Deathstarr, Desert Mountain Tribe, Dead Leaf Echo, The Stargazer Lillies @ Baby’s All Right
If you like shoegaze, you’ll want to be at Baby’s All Right tonight for this show featuring Austin’s Ringo Deathstarr who do it about as good as anyone these days, plus Stargazer Lilies, and Brooklyn’s Dead Leaf Echo. Earplugs are probably a good idea.
Al Lover, Worthless @ Cake Shop
Psychedelic beatmaker Al Lover makes dance music, but of a sort that owes more to The 13th Floor Elevators (or Neu!) than typical disco/house/etc influences.
Sound of Ceres, Pick a Piper, Innera @ Mercury Lounge
After three acclaimed albums with hazy sunshine pop group Candy Claws, Karen and Ryan Hover formed new project, Sound of Ceres, whose sound is ethereal, orchestral and lost in space.
Hess Is More @ National Sawdust
In seven-member mode, Hess is More are premiering new works as Artists in Residence at National Sawdust. Expect funky, krauty stuff.
Ken Vandermark (Made To Break) @ Union Pool
Jazz saxophonist Ken Vandermark is road-testing material for his new album on tour with his combo Made to Break that includes Kristof Curzmann and Casper Tadhouders.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
Buried at Sea, Krieg, Beefrot @ Saint Vitus
Chicago’s sludgy Buried At Sea are one of the many projects of the very talented Sanford Parker. They haven’t put out music in about a decade and they don’t play live too often, but they’ll be in NYC tonight. Making this show even better is the great black metal band Krieg.
The Wonder Years, letlive., Microwave @ The Paramount
The Wonder Years’ 2015 album No Closer To Heaven managed to achieve all the thrills you get from the much-maligned genre pop punk, but it also constantly broke the boundaries of that genre and contained too much emotion and expert songwriting to write off. The live shows are even more cathartic than the record.
Pokey LaFarge, The Cactus Blossoms @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Following a 2013 LP on Third Man, Pokey LaFarge signed to Rounder and put out Something In The Water last year. Like its predecessor, it’s dedicated to old timey folk music and pretty much ignores modern sounds completely.
