The Meadows @ Citi Field
Inaugural NYC fest The Meadows wraps up today, and Kanye’s headlining set alone is worth the price of the ticket. Not to mention there’s also Chance the Rapper, The 1975, Twin Shadow (performing ‘Purple Rain’), Metric, Charles Bradley and Chairlift.
Roots Picnic @ Bryant Park
The Roots wrap up the first-ever NYC edition of their Roots Picnic today. They headline with a collaborative set with David Byrne, Nile Rodgers, and Wu-Tang Clan (reason enough to go); and there’s also sets by Swizz Beatz, Deerhoof, Lil Uzi Vert, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Black Thought’s Live Mixtape, EPMD, and more.
Luna, Cut Worms @ Rough Trade
A practice run for an upcoming UK festival, Luna will play their 1995 album Penthouse in full tonight (and probably a few other favorites).
Midge Ure, Richard Lloyd @ Gramercy Theatre
He was in synthpop band Visage, took Ultravox to #1 with the histrionic “Vienna,” cowrote Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and had a successful solo career as well. Midge plays tonight with Television’s Richard Lloyd opening.
TacocaT, Dude York, Very Fresh @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Seattles Tacocat tackle serious issues with wit instead of sermon which makes their punky pop fun and thoughtful all at once.
Glacial (Lee Ranaldo, David Watson, Tony Buck), 75 Dollar Bill, MV Carbon @ Union Pool
Sonic Youth may be over, but all the members remain very active. Tonight, Lee Ranaldo plays NYC with his band Glacial.
Violent Femmes @ The Paramount
Violent Femmes’ self-titled debut is a stone-cold teen angst classic that is still help folks sort out their weird feelings. They may have never equalled it, but Gordon Gano still channels those geeky hormones today.
Opposite Sex, Pill, Heaven’s Gate, DJ A. Savage (of Parquet Courts) @ ALPHAVILLE
Hailing from the New Zealand indie rock hotbed of Dunedin, Opposite Sex are dark and strange while maintaining a bit of a pop edge to the gloom, as heard on their new LP, Hamlet which is out on Dull Tools. The label is presenting this show, which includes skronky punks Pill, the hazy rock of Heaven’s Gate and Dull Tools prez (and Parquet Courts frontman) A. Savage on the 1s and 2s.
Rock Carnival @ First Energy Park
NJ’s Rock Carnival wraps up with another weird-but-kinda-cool lineup. There’s alt-metal staples Life of Agony, plus some veteran hair metal representation from Doro, Sebastian Bach, Bullet Boys, and Tom Keifer. And then there’s mall-goth band The Used. Like we said, weird.
The Backup Plan, StrongPoint, Gabriel, Jukai @ Amityville Music Hall
The Long Island melodic hardcore scene of the late ’90s and early ’00s produced a lot of cool bands, one of which was The Backup Plan who reunite for two LI shows this weekend.
