Philly neo-soul great Jill Scott has seriously powerful pipes, as most recently heard on last year’s Woman. Influential MC Rakim, who’s at least partially responsible for rap as we know it today, opens the show.
Baroness, Pallbearer @ Webster Hall
This is a killer double bill for fans of metal or just heavy rock, with proggy sludge greats Baroness, who continue to reinvent their sound, and Pallbearer, who do a lot of justice to traditional doom.
Summerstage in Association with Okayafrica Present: Mbongwana Star / Batida / Young Paris / Okayafrica Electrafrique @ SummerStage, Central Park
Congolese band Mbongwana Star made a splash with their debut album, From Kinasha, which is a joyous representation of their “new style” sound, self-described as “space ipno afro punk rock electro !!! style.” If you dig Konono No.1 (who feature on album highlight “Malukayi”) or William Onyeabor, get thee to this free SummerStage show today.
Gina Birch (of the Raincoats), Hurry Up, Crusher @ The Silent Barn
Hurry Up is a new-ish Portland punk trio featuring Thermals members Kathy Foster & Westin Glass, and Maggie Vail of the now-defunct Bangs. They play tonight with Gina Birch of post-punk icons The Raincoats.
The Go-Go’s, Best Coast, Kaya Stewart @ Stone Pony Summer Stage
The long-running new wavers will soon be going going gone, as a group, so go and sing along to “Our Lips are Sealed,” “Head Over Heels,” “We Got the Beat.” Also: Jane Weidlin’s just one of the coolest people ever. Best Coast makes for a nice double bill.
