Dave Smalley (playing Dag Nasty’s Can I Say) @ Grand Victory
Melodic hardcore legends Dag Nasty are currently reunited with their original singer Shawn Brown, but tonight Dave Smalley, who sang on their classic debut album Can I Say, will perform that album in full. This is not only a chance to see some killer punk rock in a very intimate venue, but it’s also a good reason to get to Grand Victory before it closes at the end of the month.
‘Rubble Kings’ screening w/ DJ Kool Herc, Little Shalimar @ Crotona Park
The DJ widely credited with inventing turntablism and jumpstarting hip hop, DJ Kool Herc spins before this free SummerStage screening of “Rubble Kings’ which documents that early ’70s era in the Bronx.
Nothing, Citizen, Culture Abuse, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler @ Market Hotel
This is a pretty great bill all around, with heavy shoegazers Nothing, new-school post-hardcore band Citizen, West Coast punks Culture Abuse, and experimental duo Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler.
Yonatan Gat, Nap Eyes @ Baby’s All Right
Hailing from Halifax, NS, Nap Eyessound a bit like The Clean or The Modern Lovers or another Lou Reed descendent of your choice. Headlining is former Monotonix man Yonatan Gat whose improvisational live sets are not to be missed.
Rhett Miller @ City Winery
Whether electric or acoustic, with the Old 97’s or solo, Rhett Miller is always entertaining.
Summer Scum 5 @ Trans-Pecos
The noise-oriented two-day Summer Scum festival wraps up today with Drew McDowall, Lettera 22, Relay For Death, Burning Star Core, and many more.
Direct Hit, Pkew Pkew Pkew, Problem Daughter, Timeshares @ Shea Stadium
If you dig punk that’s poppy but still raw and full of energy, this entire bill is worth catching start to finish.
Mahogany, Pale Dian, Lazy Queen @ Pianos
Local dreampop act Mahogany made the incredible Connectivity! in 2008 and haven’t released much of anything since, though they continue to gig. Having just signed to Saint Marie records, Mahoganny seem to be on the verge of a new album. Needle them with questions tonight.
