The Chills, The Railway Children, Even As We Speak, Secret Shine, Eureka California, Witching Waves, Lake Ruth, Sunny Summer Day, catholic easter colors @ Littlefield
It’s the final day of NYC Popfest with this all-day show featuring the first show in 20 years by New Zealand icons The Chills, and the first-ever live show from Lake Ruth. Plus two bands who were on legendary label Sarah Records (Even As We Speak, Secret Shine) and lots more. Sold out but there may be tickets when doors open at 2:30 PM.
108, Blacklisted, Sweet Jesus @ Saint Vitus (two shows)
New York krishnacore greats 108 were initially around from 1991 to 1996, but they regrouped in the 2000s and released two new albums which proved they still had the fury of their early days. They haven’t played NYC since 2011, but finally will change that today. There’s a a 1 PM show where they’ll play songs from Holyname and Songs of Separation, and a 6 PM show where they’ll play songs from Threefold Misery, Curse of Instinct, A New Beat and 18.61. Both are with hardcore boundary pushers Blacklisted and hardcore supergroup Sweet Jesus (members of Have Heart, Verse, Dropdead, Fucking Invincible and Soul Control).
Vulture Festival
Day 2 of this pop culture extravaganza includes a talk/jam session between Fred Armisen and Sharon Van Etten, a live quiz show that pits the casts of Younger and You’re The Worst against each other, talks with the cast/creators of Unreal, a Rent singalong and more.
Starchild and The New Romantic, Emmanuel Waltz Band, Caverns, J Keys @ Bowery Electric
You may have seen Bryndon Cook playing in Charilift, or Blood Orange or Solange Knowles’ band, but he also makes music of his own with Starchild & the New Romantic. He cites Prince as his biggest influence, but you can also hear a lot of mid-’80s pop R&B in what he does (Sade, Terrence Trent D’Arby, even Spandau Ballet), not to mention Parliament Funkadelic and ’00s-era chillwave.
David Liebe Hart (of Tim & Eric’s), Crazy and The Brains @ Studio at Webster Hall
Most know David Liebe Hart as the oddball puppeteer from Tim and Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job! but he writes and records songs too. This is his first of two NYC shows.
Jeremy Gara (of Arcade Fire), Dave Harrington, Dan Friel @ Trans Pecos
Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara recently released Limn, a solo album of ambient-leaning instrumentals. He celebrates with this show featuring Dave Harrington and Dan Friel, should be a good one.
The Veldt, Your 33 Black Angels, Steep Leans, Earnhart @ Union Pool
North Carolina’s The Veld have been making their particular strain of soulful shoegaze for over 20 years. The band released The Shocking Fuzz Of Your Electric Fur – The Drake Equation earlier this year.
Kiki & Herb @ Joe’s Pub
Legendary lounge/cabaret duo Kiki and Herb (aka Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman) went into retirement in 2007 but they’re returning to the stage for this run called “Kiki and Herb: Seeking Asylum!” Sold out but a limited number of tickets given away free each night via lottery.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
Long Beard, Tim Woulfe, Rainwater @ Alphaville
New Brunswick’s Long Beard have a delicate sound that’s somewhere between slowcore, folk, and dream pop. Last year they released their solid debut album, Sleepwalker.
