Warning, Thou, Ruby the Hatchet @ Le Poisson Rouge
Patrick Walker’s recently-reformed Warning are on an Invisible Oranges-presented tour performing their beloved 2006 album Watching from a Distance — an album that fused doom metal’s staggering weight with the emotive nature of American Music Club-styled singer/songwriter music — in full. Both openers tonight are worth catching too: sludge greats Thou and retro/stoner rockers Ruby the Hatchet.
Peelander-Z, TORANAVOX, Realistic Bodies @ Baby’s All Right
Gonzo outer-space Japanese monster movie rock band Peelander-Z, who you may have seen battling the Power Rangers or on the Gong Show, beam down to Baby’s tonight.
Beach Fossils, Snail Mail, Raener @ Brooklyn Steel
Beach Fossils‘ recent album, Somersault, is a jangly, breezy, harmony-laden record finds them sonically siding up to the likes of Real Estate (and is the best thing they’ve done yet).
Nik Turner’s Hawkwind, Hedersleben, Netherlands @ Cape House
Sax and flute man Nik Turner was a member of Hawkwind in the ’70s and ’80s and now fronts his own version of the Spacerock pioneers. His backing band, Hedersleben, gets their own opening set.
Demetri Martin @ Gramercy Theatre (two shows)
Brainy comedian Demetri Martin brings his “Let’s Get Awkward” tour to NYC for his third show this week.
Peaches, Juliana Huxtable, Asian Doll, De Se @ Knockdown Center
We can only imagine Peaches has something special and awesome in store for this “Club Glow” Halloween party. Asian Doll will perform as well with DJ sets from rom Juliana Huxtable, LE1F, ABBY, DJ NJ Drone, Felfar, Sadaf and De Se.
Protomartyr, Flasher, Weeping Icon @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Fresh off the release of their great, dystopian fourth album Relatives in Descent, Detroit’s Protomartyr wrap up their North American tour with Flasher (Taylor of Priest’s other band) tonight. Brooklyn’s Weeping Icon open.
Fatboy Slim, Detlef, Clozee, Maximono, Golden Pony, Jubilee, Dirty Looks, Dischetto @ Secret Location
Onetime bassist for the Housemartins, Norman Cook reinvented himself in the late ’90s as Fatboy Slim whose “Big Beat” sound was all the rage for a while. It’s been a while since “The Rockefeler Skank” but Norman can still pack the dancefloor.
Springsteen on Broadway
It’s the hottest ticket on Broadway: Bruce Springsteen playing solo at the intimate Walter Kerr Theatre, performing some of his biggest hits and telling stories about them. His show runs through February.
Princess (Maya Rudolph & Gretchen Lieberum) @ Brooklyn Bowl
There are a lot of tribute/cover bands playing this Halloween weekend but you’re unlikely to see one more fun and sincerely good as Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum’s Princess, their tribute to the Purple One.
Travis Scott, Virgil Abloh @ New York Expo Center
Travis Scott is more popular than ever, having sold out a headlining show at NYC’s Terminal 5 earlier this year and having gotten the packed crowd at Barclays Center going wild when he provided direct support to Kendrick Lamar there over the summer. Now he’s back in NYC for this sold-out Halloween party.
Citizen, Sorority Noise, Great Grandpa @ House of Independents
After exploring aggressive, noisy post-hardcore on 2015’s Everybody Is Going to Heaven, Citizen released their softest and prettiest album with this year’s As You Please. They’re on tour with Sorority Noise, whose 2017 LP You’re Not As _____ As You Think is their best yet, and Great Grandpa.
Acid King, Unearthly Trance, Godmaker @ Saint Vitus
San Francisco stoner metal band returned in 2015 with Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere, their first album in a decade. They’re in NYC tonight with support from local sludge staples Unearthly Trance, who released their first album in seven years this year.
