Midnight Oil, BOYTOY @ Webster Hall
One of the best live bands of the last 30+ years, Australia’s Midnight Oil are on their first tour since 2002, and they remain a force. Setlists on this tour have been packed with favorites, and given the world political climate, we expect them to have a lot to say at these shows.
The Feelies @ Rough Trade
One of the great New York bands (yes, technically Hoboken), The Feelies’ two-guitar attack never goes out of style. The band don’t really tour, so chances to see them — like this three-night stand at Rough Trade — should never be taken lightly. Tonight is sold out, but they were selling tickets at the door last night. You should go.
Buffalo Tom @ Bowery Ballroom
’90s college radio favorites Buffalo Tom are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their much-loved Let Me Come Over and will be playing the whole thing tonight, along with a set of other favorites.
ADULT., RItual Howls, Void Vision @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Long-running synth-wave duo ADULT.’s new album is Detroit House Guests which is a good descriptor for it too. They invited a variety of collaborators (Swans’ Michael Gira, Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas J McCarthy among them) to come stay with them and record. Will we get any of those house guests tonight?
Eaters, Greg Fox, Operator Music Band @ Union Pool
Brooklyn duo Eaters released their second album this week which expands the sonic palette of their 2014 debut considerably, with some songs firmly in “rock” territory (like the awesome, Eno-esque opening cut “Embrace the Strange”) and other further exploring dance music. Tonight’s the record release show.
Tokyo x Brooklyn
Tokyo X Brooklyn is a two day music, food and culture festival happening at Brooklyn Expo Center on May 13 – 14 that is “bringing together two cultures, Tokyo and Brooklyn, featuring an exciting lineup of musicians, a variety of culinary favorites, innovative technology, artists, and performers. The concept is to bridge the gap between Brooklyn creativity and craftsmanship and Japanese pop culture.” Today’s lineup is headlined by Blonde Redhead.
Aretha Franklin @ NYCB Theatre at Westbury
The Queen of Soul says she’ll be retiring soon (after she releases a new Stevie Wonder-produced album), and earlier this year she unfortunately had to cancel some shows due to illness. Luckily, she’s back out there and hitting the stage tonight for what may be one of her last-ever New York shows.
Burn, Ache, Vein, Hangman @ Saint Vitus
Last year, NYHC greats Burn released the From the Ashes EP on Bridge 9, their first release since 2001, and then entered the studio with Kurt Ballou for a new full length which is due out at some point on Deathwish. The band — which currently has original vocalist Chaka Malik and guitarist Gavin Van Vlack joined by Glassjaw’s former rhythm section, Manuel Carrero (bass) and Durijah Lang (drums) — are playing some shows this week.
Honey Soundsystem, Wrecked, Honcho, Spotlight, The NeedlExchange, Men’s Room, The Carry Nation, DJ Holographic @ 592 Johnson (RBMA)
From the show description: “These are parties run by gay men but welcoming people of all orientations to express their own definition of freedom and fun on a sweaty dancefloor, and for the first time ever we’ll be bringing together DJs from Honey Soundsystem (San Francisco), The NeedlExchange (Washington D.C.), Honcho (Pittsburgh), Men’s Room (Chicago), Spotlight (Los Angeles), The Carry Nation and Wrecked (New York City).”
Alarm Will Sound @ Merkin Concert Hall (Ecstatic Music Festival)
The Ecstatic Music Festival continues today with 20-piece ensemble Alarm Will Sound, who have performed Dirty Projectors music, collaborated with Tyondai Braxton, and more.
