Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Veldt @ Webster Hall
After a string of albums that leaned heavy on lengthy, drony psych, Anton Newcomb has brought back the hooks for the BJM’s last few albums and the band includes much of the lineup from their classic late ’90s period. Opening are long-running soulful shoegazers The Veldt.
White Lung @ Secret Location
White Lung just released their fourth album Paradise which is another winner. It has all the boundary-pushing punk rippers you want from this band, but also some of their slowest, prettiest material and some of their poppiest material.
Chance the Rapper @ Terminal 5
Chance the Rapper just debuted his new single “Blessings” on Fallon with a gospel choir, a preacher-style sermon and a female soul singer (it was not unlike Kanye’s SNL performance with Chance), and he’ll put out his new mixtape Chance 3 this Friday. First, he plays this benefit show for Robin Hood tonight. Tickets start at $150.
Tegan & Sara @ Le Poisson Rouge
Tegan & Sara will release their new album Love You to Death in June, and based on early singles, it’ll have them continuing their trek into full-on pop. Tonight they play this intimate, sold-out pre-release show but they’ll be back in NYC for a larger show in November.
Chelsea Wolfe, A Dead Forest Index @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Not too many people nail gothy pop with an approach as genuinely dark as Chelsea Wolfe. Her Sargent House labelmates A Dead Forest Index are worth catching too. This is the second of two NYC shows.
The Black Lips, Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Dion Lunadon @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Atlanta garage rockers The Black Lips always put on wild, memorable shows, and they’re back in NYC for two nights this week. Both are with local organ-fueled punks Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, who are equally worth seeing. This is the second, and Dion Lunadon of A Place to Bury Strangers opens this one.
Eagulls, The Britanys @ Rough Trade
For their second album, UK band Eagulls have applied the brakes just a bit (a good thing), offering up a more varied, textured take on early-’80s postpunk.
‘Beauty and Noise’ at National Sawdust (New York Guitar Festival)
The 2016 New York Guitar Festival continues today with Beauty and Noise, which is “devoted to players who inhabit electronic frontiers.” The lineup includes David Torn, Dither Guitar Duo, Elliot Sharp, Anthony Pirog, Ben Monder and Patrick Higgins.
Prince Tribute Show @ C’mon Everybody
This tribute to the late Prince features over 20 singers performing with a house band.
Night Train with Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
All aboard Wyatt Cenac’s weekly comedy cavalcade, this week with guests Erin Judge, Janelle James, Greg Stone, Calvin Cato, Drew Michael, and Marie Faustin.
