Stephin Merritt’s upcoming 50 Song Memoir features a song about every year from the first five decades of his life. These live shows (tonight songs 1-25, Saturday will be 26-50) feature musicians using 50 different instruments, keeping the theme going.
The Hold Steady @ Brooklyn Bowl
The Hold Steady are on night three of their four-night run celebrating the 10th anniversary of the beloved Boys and Girls In America. Like at all four shows, there’s a surprise opener — any guesses? Here’s a clue. The opener goes on at 9:15 and THS are on at 10:15.
Mothers, Patio, Yairms @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Athens, GA band Mothers have been having a good year thanks to the release of their very solid debut album When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired. They’ve been to NYC a handful of times and they’re back tonight.
John Lennon tribute w/ Donovan, Paula Cole, Willie Nile, Toshi Reagon, The Kennedys, Rich Pagano @ Symphony Space
Symphony Space has been doing these John Lennon tributes for 36 years, and tonight is headlined by Donovan who will perform a few of his own songs in addition to solo Lennon and Beatles classics.
Negative Approach, Drunken Rampage, Absolute Power, Haram, Sick Head @ Goldsounds
The great veteran hardcore band Negative Approach have only released one album (1983’s Tied Down), and it holds up extremely well today. Any chance to see them is a treat.
Titus Andronicus, Liam Betson, Boosegumps @ Hasbrouck Heights VFW
Titus Andronicus have gotten pretty big, but there’s still nothing like seeing this DIY-minded punk band in a DIY type venue, so it’s cool that they’re playing a VFW hall tonight (in their home state of Jersey).
Lone, Dorisburg, JDH & Dave P @ Good Room
Electronic musician Lone returned earlier this year with the great new album Levitate on R&S. Tonight he’ll move the dancefloors at Good Room.
yMusic @ Carnegie Hall
Multi-instrument ensemble yMusic will be performing “works from its critically acclaimed albums Beautiful Mechanical and Balance Problems, and premieres of new works by Chris Thile and Caroline Shaw, both part of Carnegie Hall’s 125 Commissions Project.”
Supersuckers, Jesse Dayton, Gallows Bound @ Gramercy Theatre
Country punk pranksters Supersuckers have been kicking the shit since the early ’90s and still like to raise hell.
John Zorn (Music for Agnes Martin) @ Guggenheim Museum
John Zorn’s “Dark River” from his 1995 album Redbird was inspired by the late Agnes Martin, whose work is in retrospective currently at Guggenheim, and this program serves as the premiere of two brand-new compositions also inspired by her work. He’ll perform in the museum’s iconic rotunda — sold out but there will be standby tickets at the door.
DIANA, Mozart’s Sister @ Rough Trade
Toronto’s DIANA, aka Carmen Elle, as both toured with and in Austra, and make a similar brand of ethereal synthpop. Their new LP, Familiar Touch, was released this month and they’re currently on tour with Montreal’s Mozart’s Sister (aka onetime Shapes & Sizes/Think About Life singer Caila Thompson-Hannant).
‘Goodnight Brooklyn: The Story of Death by Audio’ @ Alamo Drafthouse
Matt Conboy’s documentary about the venue he co-ran finally gets a proper NYC run at this brand new NYC branch of the popular theater chain. Tonight features a post-screening Q&A with Conboy and other DbA folks moderated by BV editor Bill Pearis, and there’s a free afterparty at Alamo bar House of Wax with a live performance by Drawing Boards.
Chick Corea @ Blue Note
Legendary jazz pianist, composer and 22-time Grammy Award winner Chick Corea turned 75 in June, and has been celebrating this milestone with a series of dates at The Blue Note Jazz Club.
