Tricky, Rituals of Mine (fka Sister Crayon) @ Webster Hall
Between his work with Massive Attack and his endlessly influential solo debut Maxinquaye, Tricky pretty much wrote the book on trip hop and he continues to make vital music 20 years on. BrooklynVegan is presenting tonight’s show and We do hope that, as it’s Halloween Weekend, he plays “Pumpkin”
Japandroids, Greys @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Japandroids haven’t released an album since 2012’s still-awesome Celebration Rock, and they hadn’t toured in three years. Now they’re finally back on the road, playing new songs, and saying an album is on the way. Exciting! This is their first of two sold-out NYC shows with fellow Canadians Greys.
Sammus, Sad13 (Sadie DuPuis from Speedy Ortiz), Vagabon @ ALPHAVILLE
Ithaca rapper/producer Sammus is currently on the road with Speedy Ortiz singer Sadie Dupuis’ solo project Sad13, which is a pretty cool pairing. Tonight’s show also has local support from Vagabon (whose voice you may have heard on the new Crying album).
Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders @ City Winery
This one of a kind variety show with celebrated musicians, writers and comedians tonight features Elvis Perkins, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Dawn Landes, Eugene Mirman, and more.
DFA Ghost Dog #1 @ Good Room
DFA Records is hosting their Halloween edition of their semi-regular “Hot Dog” parties at Good Room, promising suprise live performances and a host of DJs all from the label’s roster.
Cass McCombs, Delicate Steve @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Cass McCombs put out music with his band The Skiffle Players earlier this year, and then contributed to the big Grateful Dead tribute album. More recently, he put out a new solo album, Mangy Love, which is a truly great record that sounds like it should go over really well live.
Joshua Winstead (of Metric), Arthur Moon @ National Sawdust
Metric will be in NYC next month, but first member Joshua Winstead comes here for a solo show in support of his recent solo album MMXX.
Skeletonwitch, Iron Reagan, Oathbreaker, Homewrecker @ Saint Vitus
This show is crazy good for fans of loud music. Skeletonwitch (who now have Adam Clemans of Wolvhammer on vocals) and Iron Reagan will bring the hard-partying thrash, Oathbreaker bring the melodic post-black metal with truly soaring vocals, and Homewrecker will be providing the metallic hardcore. This is their second of two Vitus shows this week.
Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature @ Terminal 5
This is the 2016 edition of Cypress Hill’s annual ‘Haunted Hill’ party (which usually happens at PlayStation Theatre), with fellow ’90s hip hip stars Naughty by Nature opening.
The Dickies, Lower East Side Stitches, The Bullys @ The Bowery Electric
Campy punk vets The Dickies — still with original singer Leonard Graves Phillips and guitarist Stan Lee — have been going strong since the late ’70s. They haven’t put out new music in a while, but the classics still sound great.
Phil Lesh @ The Capitol Theatre
It’s been a pretty amazing year to be a Grateful Dead fan. This weekend, Phil Lesh & Friends do three shows at the Cap. This is the first, and it has alt-country singer Nicki Bluhm playing in Phil’s band, which is pretty exciting.
“ELO Unplugged” (Sam Kogon + Dictionary Attack), Raccoon Fighter, Harvey Eyeballs, Language @ The Footlight
One of the man Halloween cover shows, tonight Sam Kogon (who has played in recent lineups of The Left Banke) indulges his love of Jeff Lynne. The rest of the bill are just playing themselves.
Hinds, Cold Fronts, Navy Gangs @ Warsaw
Spanish garage pop group Hinds have played NYC a bunch over the last year — here’s one more chance to party with them before the year’s end.
Steely Dan @ Beacon Theatre
Steely Dan are in the midst of their ten-show run at Beacon Theatre tonight and tonight will play Countdown to Ecstasy in full plus “selected other hits.”
Dan Andriano In The Emergency Room, Dan Potthast, Derek Grant @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
While Matt Skiba is busy playing in blink-182, Alkaline Trio co-frontman Dan Andriano and drummer Derek Grant iare taking the time to focus on their solo projects. Dan released the Jeff Rosenstock-produced Party Adjacent last year, and Derek put out Break Down last year. With 2/3 of Alkaline Trio in the house tonight, maybe they’ll team up for a song? Also on the bill is Dan Potthast of ska-punks MU330.
Nicole Dollanganger has dropped off tonight’s Shea Stadium show due to illness.
