Purling Hiss, Foster Care, Tim Evans @ Alphaville
Purling Hiss are one of the loudest indie rock bands on the East Coast but tonight’s show is frontman Mike Polizze in solo mode. Will it still be deafening? Probably. It’s a good bill with underrated garage punks Foster Care playing too.
My Brightest Diamond @ BRIC House
My Brightest Diamond makes brilliant, fleshed-out art pop that isn’t a million miles away from her collaborator Sufjan Stevens. Her latest release was her fifth album, This Is My Hand, in 2014.
Goldlink, Sango @ Irving Plaza
Virginia rapper GoldLink followed a solid mixtape with his debut album, And After That, We Didn’t Talk, last year. The music ranges from more traditional hip hop to straight-up dance music, and Anderson .Paak features on a track.
Christopher Owens @ Union Pool
The onetime frontman for Girls plays two solo shows at Union Pool this weekend, this being the first.
Earthless, Red Octopus @ Mercury Lounge
Earthless make spacey, riff-heavy psych that hearkens right back to the early ’70s. They do it well, and tonight’s their second of two NYC shows this week.
Grim Reaper, October 31. Psychoprism, S.A. Adams @ Saint Vitus
One of the more badass bands to come out of high-pitched wailing ’80s metal, Grim Reaper, return to NYC tonight. The only constant member is frontman Steve Grimmett, and he’s been working on a new Grim Reaper album, the band’s first since the 80s.
Murals, Idiot Glee, Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk, Nassau (ex-Guided By Voices) @ Silent Barn
It’s a double dose of Lexington, Kentucky tonight, headlined by Murals whose new album Violet City Lantern is an underrated pastoral-psych gem. Tourmate Idiot Glee, meanwhile, is channelling Eno on his new album.
Dr. Dog, The Districts @ Terminal 5
Pennsylvania’s Dr. Dog just released The Psychedelic Swamp which was a revamped version of their unreleased debut LP. Their tour with The Districts is in NYC for two T5 shows.
Angel Du$t, Higher Power, Soft Grip, Liberty @ Acheron
Angel Du$t’s lineup includes an impressive lineup of musicians from hardcore bands, but they use this outlet to make more melodic stuff.
Bill Frisell (guitar) Petra Haden (vocals) Eyvind Kang (viola) Thomas Morgan (bass) Rudy Royston (drums) @ Village Vanguard
Experimental guitarist Bill Frisell has played with John Zorn in the grindcore/jazz band Naked City, Lucinda Williams, Richard Hell, Arto Lindsay and more. This five-night run is with that dog.’s Petra Haden on vocals.
Experience Hendrix feat. Billy Cox, Buddy Guy, Zakk Wylde, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, & more @ Kings Theatre
A host of guitar talent pays tribute to Jimmy Hendrix tonight.
Phil Lesh’s “The Q” @ Capitol Theatre
The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh is on night three of his three-night run of 76th birthday shows. Tonight and tomorrow are with his band “The Q,” aka Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco & John Molo.
Noel Fielding @ Gramercy Theatre
British comedian and Mighty Boosh co-creator Noel Fielding continues his six-show run tonight.
House of Pain, Everlast @ Wellmont Theatre
St. Patrick’s Day was yesterday, but for those who haven’t stopped partying (which may include the headliners), the most famous Irish-oriented hip hop act will be dishing out shamrocks and shenanigans tonight. Frontman Everlast has his own opening set.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which just got extended through May.
Lucinda Williams @ City Winery
Lucinda Williams’ new album The Ghosts of Highway 20 is a dark, depressing album, sadly inspired by the death of her father, and it’s also one of her strongest recent releases. Tonight she continues her five-show run at City Winery.
