Animal Collective, Ratking @ Irving Plaza
Animal Collective just released their new album, Painting With, which has all the weirdo hooks you expect from them, and it’s more cohesive than their last record too. Tonight they kick off a sold-out BrooklynVegan-presented two night stand at Irving Plaza with local rap staples Ratking.
Julia Holter, Mary Lattimore @ Bowery Ballroom
If you found Julia Holter’s previous records a little too esoteric, she made it clear that with 2015’s Have You In My Wilderness she’s welcoming everyone. She didn’t “go pop” or anything, but there’s a greater emphasis on melody, with absolutely gorgeous arrangements and production. She’s great live too, with a whimsical sense of humor. Sold out.
The Glenn Branca Ensemble @ The Kitchen
No Wave vet and avant garde composer Glenn Branca will debut his new work The Third Ascension, tonight. Two shows: 7 PM and 9 PM.
Seu Jorge @ Blue Note
Best known here in America for acting in City of God and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (which he scored using only acoustic, Portuguese-language David Bowie covers), but Brazilian artist Seu Jorge has been making music since the ’90s. This is part of his 10-night run at the Blue Note.
BJ The Chicago Kid, Jay Watts @ SOB’s
BJ the Chicago Kid just released his new album for Motown, In My Mind, which recalls classic R&B slow jams and includes guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Big K.R.I.T., and more.
Bell Witch, Wrekmeister Harmonies, Insect Ark @ Saint Vitus
Bell Witch and Wrekmeister Harmonies are touring in support of their great 2015 albums, the doomy Four Phantoms and the arty guest-filled Night of Your Ascension, respectively. The tour is extra special because Bell Witch are also serving as Wrekmeister Harmonies’ backing band. Also, it’s worth showing up for local opener Insect Ark (the project of Angels of Light’s Dana Schecter).
Beech Creeps, Squad Car, Suspect @ Alphaville
Beech Creeps crank out full-throttle, art-damaged rock n’ roll, now powered by Yeah Yeah Yeah’s drummer Brian Chase behind the kit.
Chris Conley (of Saves the Day), Matt Pryor (of The Get Up Kids), Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit), Dan Adriano (of Alkaline Trio), Anthony Raneri (Bayside) @ House of Independents
It’s the recurring ‘Where’s The Band’ tour, which sees frontmen of punkish bands strip down for acoustic solo sets. Of particular note are a few guys who shaped the sound of emo as we know it, Chris Conley, Matt Pryor and Andy Jackson. Tonight’s show is at Asbury Park’s new-ish performance arts space House of Independents.
Deep-er-ness feat. Brooke Van Poppelen, Nore Davis, Matt Fulchiron, Brian Parise, Joe Zimmerman @ Union Hall
Host Joe Zimmerman presents his favorite comedians for stand up sets that explore the more meaningful topics (i.e. philosophy, psychology, religion, environment, economy, death, love, childhood, race, history, social commentary, current events, personal stories, etc). After each set, Joe and the comic sit down for a “deep talk,” in which Joe and the featured comic sit awkwardly close and Joe asks them a few ridiculous questions.
Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick. Tonight features sets by Jason Burke, Nate Craig, Anna Drezen. Kenny DeForest, and Joe Pera, plus Jaqueline Novak.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s finally putting it to bed, but not before this six-week run.
