Talib Kweli, K’Valentine, Chaz Van Queen, Yummy Bingham, MK Asante, special guests @ SOB’s
NYC rap veteran Talib Kweli is constantly busy, and this winter is no different. He’s got nine local shows coming up between now and early March, this being the first. It doubles as a celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and special guests are promised.
The Casual Dots, Molly Shnick, No Motion @ Union Pool
The Casual Dots were a supergroup of sorts consisting of singer-guitarist Christina Billotte (Slant 6/ Quix*o*tic), guitarist Kathi Wilcox (Bikini Kill) and drummer Steve Dore (Deep Lust). Despite the punk background, The Casual Dots were more early-’80s shambly/twee postpunk in sound, with Billotte’s vocals taking on a sweet, winsome quality. They called it quits shortly after releasing their 2004 debut, but have reunited for a few East Coast shows.
Winter Jazzfest
Winter Jazzfest wraps up tonight, including a John Coltrane tribute at LPR with Nels Cline, Zeena Parkins, Nate Wooley, Ikue Mori and more. More info here.
Saul Williams, Mariachi Flor de Toloache @ Rockwood Music Hall
Paradigm/Windish throw another APAP showcase tonight, this time with rapper/spoken word artist Saul Williams and mariachi band Mariachi Flor de Toloache (who just toured with The Arcs).
Globalfest 2016 @ Webster Hall
The annual NYC world music festival takes over all three of Webster Hall’s stages, featuring Astrid Hadad, Debauche,Ginkgoa, Simon Shaheen, Somi, and lots more.
Horse Meat Disco, Sean B., Will Automagic, Mike Servito, DJ Ron Like Hell @ Output
This London-based four-man DJ collective are known for finding pearls in bins of forgotten disco 12″, having released a series of acclaimed compilations. Their real expertise comes into play at their DJ gigs, though. Just trust their taste…and the beat.
Blind Boys of Alabama, Heritage Blues Orchestra, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies @ BB King’s
Gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama have been going strong since the 1940s, and they likely gained more fans in the indie rock world after their 2013 album that was produced by Justin Vernon and featured tUnE-yArDs, My Brightest Diamond, Sam Amidon and more. Weirdly enough, tonight’s show is with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, who apparently still exist.
Buckwheat Zydeco, Marcia Ball, Jack Broadbent @ Highline Ballroom
Another APAP showcase, this one featuring accordion king Buckweat Zydeco, and blues singer Marcia Ball.
